You need to go to a podiatrist (foot doctor). He will have to cut the ingrown toenail out. It's scary, but my aunt had one that went untreated and it grew DEEP into the tissue of her toes.
To prevent them, cut your toenails straight across and do NOT cut into the corners to make them round. Don't trim them too far back.
And to correct someone, pedicurists are NOT allowed to cut out an ingrown toenail. It's considered a surgical procedure. Anyone licensed is to immediately refer the client with an ingrown to a podiatrist. Any kind of infection - bacterial, viral, or fungal - cannot be handled by a manicurist/pedicurist/cosmetologist.

Those are the worst! I've received many tips throughout the years. You've got to be careful, because if you've got infection in there, it could get serious. If the skin bordering your nail gets red and is very painful to the touch, go see your doctor. I've had two very bad ingrown toenails, both of them on the big toe on either feet. Very painful! An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail starts growing inside of the skin bordering your toe, where the name comes from. What you need to do is start cutting your nails square - don't round down the edges of the nail. Clean the edges of your nails regularly, all kinds of poop gets stuck in there - sock lint, dirt, whatever. Every day, take a cuticle remover (a small tool you can get at a pharmacy, looks like a sewing tool used to remove stitches), and gently move out the gunk found between your nail and the skin surrounding it. It's important to push it from the beginning of your toenail to the end of your toenail - if you go from end to beginning, you could push something inside and create an infection. Clean your cuticle remover tool with alcohol after every use - use TP or a cotton ball, put some rubbing alcohol on that, and rub the tool a few times. Sometimes you'll feel some calloused skin between your nail and the skin surrounding your nail. Usually this hard skin needs to be removed, because it kind of grabs onto your nail, and you need to let your nail grow out without getting snagged. If the nail gets snagged, it'll turn inwards, and grow inwards, exacerbating your problem. I hope this helps - keep doing this until your nail grows out and you can see the edges of each side of your nail. If it gets worse, go see your doctor!

To get it out you'll most likely have to go to a doctor. He'll numb your entire toe then have to cut the nail out. If you want to try something else.... make sure you have no polish on your nails. At night, take a cotton ball and snip a small piece off. Then put the cotton underneath the nail where it's grown into the skin. It'll hurt when you do this probably, but it get it in there as far as you can. The next day, take out cotton, and put a new piece in. Keep doing this. The idea is that the cotton will slowly pull the nail away from the skin as it grows, but obviously this will take a long time. You can use ibuprofen or tylenol in the meantime, but I would still recommend seeing your doc to get it taken care of.
To prevent it in the future, cut your toe nails straight across. Don't cut them on a curve because then when they start to grow out, they'll grow into your skin, and your ingrown toe nail problem will happen all over again.

i actually read this in an old issue of Glamour yesterday. they said the only way to treat an ingrown nail is to have a podiatrist or dermatologist dig the nail out of the skin, or cut part of the nail off. if it's chronic, a doctor will have to place an insert under your nail. so to answer your question, yes you should see a doctor.

Go see a doctor this time, and they'll be able to tell you how to deal with it yourself before it gets that bad next time.
And for the future, don't trim your toenails very short, or rounded. Cut them pretty much straight across the toe.

Sounds like it is time to see a podiatrist because the ingrown nails are in so deep & your toes are really painful.
Don't mess around w/ them yourself, you could end up doing more damage & getting an infection.

The best way is to go to a doctor because he/she can get it out and then in most likely will not come back. Also they can do things to make the pain lessen. But you can also dig them out yourself but that hurts like h*ll and it also makes it so they have a better chance of returning. Good luck.
