At one time in history everyone believed the earth was flat--no-one admires or respects that belief anymore(with the exception of a few fruitcakes)

Faith has its place, but reality and the demand of proof also has its place in life. Do you believe everything people tell you? Or do you demand 'proofs' on occasion? Just because someone, or some organization claims 'God' said this...do you immediately believe them if the thing asked or spoken seems to go against what a 'god' would want people to do or think? Belief in the impossible is almost a part of human nature. You can be athiest, and still believe in things that seem beyond proof or evidence, such as believing someone will survive a seemingly fatal crash, somehow 'knowing' this has happened against all reason. This sort of 'faith' occurs over and over again. I most respect people of 'faith' who truly still believe their creed AFTER looking at evidence to the contrary and still believe in their 'faith' while acknowledging the possible faults of same (I am talking religious faith here).

"FAITH is Believing in something without Proof or Evidence"
No it isn't. Faith is trusting in something. For instance I have faith that the next time I go to start my car it will work and that I'll end up at my destination safely.
I believe this because it worked the last time I used it and I'm not prone to getting into wrecks. But I can't know for sure that the car will start or that I'll actually get where I want to go. I just have faith that this will be so.
The Christian religion is based upon faith in God's Word. But there are many historical proofs to base this faith upon. For instance I have faith that Jesus was a real person who was killed on a cross and rose from the dead. When you examine the evidence for that belief you can see that it passes the test of what is used in a courtroom to prove that something occurred even though there are no living witnesses to the event.
Here's a link for you to examine that demonstrates my point from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School's web site. It's an examination of the case for the resurrection of Christ performed by one of the founders of the Harvard School of Law whose purpose was to act as the prosecutor in the case to show that there was no evidence for the resurrection of Christ.

I think this kind of faith should be strongly admired and respected. Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. This is a very strong statement and it takes a strong person to have this kind of faith.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1
shall we disbelieve what we do not know? not many know how nuclear weapons work. but we know they work. ive never seen any tangible evidence and/or proof of such, but i do not doubt their power. now...do you understand how the world works? how the universe is held together? how your heart beats? humans have not the power to make any organic systems. so how did we get them? it had to come from a power greater than human power. we call that God.
faith is more like believing something you cannot understand because all acquired data points to it. Human intelligence points to an intelligent designer. faith is not believing something without proof of evidence. you have posted a trick question. i do not admire one believing in something for which there is no evidence. i admire one choosing to say i do not know, i cannot understand, and im okay with that. there is One who does, and have faith in His power

Faith needs proof and evidence, and it's how this evidence make you believe in Allah should be admired and respected. In Islam there are many evidence such as the miracles of Qura'an and Allah's creatures "sun, moon, humans,animals,...etc." which help people to believe and have a strong FAITH. :)

I don't know where you got this definition of faith but if you are trying to impugn Christianity with it you are off target since this is not the Christian concept of faith. Christian faith is a response to evidence and proof given by God. This occurs in his revelation of himself to the one who responds. The experience of God is so profoundly real that no one who has experienced it can doubt it. Those who have not experienced God for themselves often misunderstand faith as pretending if they have failed to research what Christians themselves say about faith. Unbelievers have an intellectual right to question the Christian claim to this experience but they are just beating a straw man when they make up their own concept of faith which Christians do not believe in and then criticize it. I am a Christian who embraces the biblical concept of faith and I would not respect anyone who professed the unbiblical notion of faith expressed in your question.

That is well. But faith is just the first step. As it says faith without works is dead. And justifying ones personal doubts and fears by dumping on things they don't like, is counter-productive. As the Book talks about those who speak evilly of things they don't understand. Noone has to have a blind faith!

I believe that the decision to have faith in something should be respected, but I'm not so sure that it deserves admiration.

Yes, faith is to be sure of what you hope for and the evidence of things not seen. Some don't believe that you can have enough evidence of something to believe in it and not see it. Yet I have faith that wind is real! I can see the effects of the wind, trees blowing, grass moving, etc. But I can't see the wind, yet I know it's real! I have the evidence of the unseen! Just as I can't see God physically in front of me, yet I see the evidences of Him everyday in my life!!!
