My mum and dad always smoke in the house.. always! even in the summer, and we have a german shepard dog and his fur REEKS of the stuff! I feel sorry for him, because when i smell it.. its so bad i have to hold my breathe when walking past them. But the dog has a much better sence of smell, so it must be really bad for him! Iv'e told them time and time again to please take it else where or give up because its effecting all of us in so many ways that you wouldnt think of! and its really selfish of u!, and i get told to get lost, its there house they will do what they want, and if i dont like it i should move out! i mean.. they smoke the stuff everyday so they should be the experts on the damage right!?

How can this smoking effect the dog?
Will he get seriously ill?

and what things can i say to them to make them STOP

My friend's dog got lung cancer and died because his dad smoked in the house. Not to mention what this is doing to your lungs. I am so sorry. I really am, because it doesn't sound like your parents give a rat's behind about you or the dog. If they won't smoke outside for your health, they aren't going to do it for the dog.

If you can, I don't know how old you are, move out - and take the poor dog with you. And good for you for not smoking!

i honestly think that u should give it a nice bath. With some nice smelling shampoo. Also take it outisde every day for a walk in the FRESH kinda air! lol and spray the air with some ncie good smelling fragrence. So maybe the smell could go away.Spray your furniture and everything.I think its bad for the dog so keep the dog away from them at all times! And i meen your parents. If your old enough i think u should move into your own condo or apartement so u two [u and ur dog] could live in a peaceful non smoking evironment. And if ur parents ever come over tell them no smoking in the house.Cause the house is yours. Its just like what they said to u at their house right???? I'm sorry for your dog.But i think u should really do what i just said. if my answer is good i'd be glad to be chosen as best asnwer! lol

Second hand smoke effects dogs the same way as it does humans - cancer, asthma, reduced sense of smell, breathing problems, skin problems, allergies, etc.
It sounds like your parents are beyond hearing reason and are in a very selfish state of mind to do it around not only their dog but especially their children.
Unfortunately, no laws are being broken, so other than pleading with them about stopping or going outside, there isn't much you can do.

Unfortunately I know its not as easy as everyone thinks with smoking parents. Some people just think you can reason with your parents and that is going to make a difference. But I know first hand that logic, bargaining and fighting are not resolutions.

What I did to deal with smoking parents was
1. kept my window open in my room to let fresh air in
2. When I was older I bought a machine something like the ionic breeze to clean the air out in my room.
3. I had a fan blowing air into my room from the window. I closed the vent that shares air with the rest of the house.
4. I washed my sheets, pillow cases and comforter frequently. I febreeze sprayed my room before vaccuuming. I kept my door closed at all times.
5. When my parents weren't home I would open windows and let the fresh air in.
6. A tip for the dog: keep him in your room, bathe him often and take him for lots of walks in the clean air outside, preferably twice a day.
This isn't going to solve everything. Inevitably, your clothes, belongings, dog, walls, bathroom, etc will all smell like cigarette. Unfortunately the idea is to deal with it as well as you can without causing a major conflict with your parents. You need to keep your head up high and show them respect whilst trying to reduce clashing and also keeping your self-respect. I know it sucks and it can be embarassing to live with smokers, but you will appreciate your own beautiful clean air when you move out one day.

Second hand smoke has the same affect on animals as it does on humans. They get lung cancer just as we do.

I feel sorry for you, it must be so frustrating! It makes me crazy too when I smell smoke on animal's fur.

I'd tell them yeah it's their house, but there's this thing called RESPONSIBILITY. They have responsibility towards the people they live with, and very much so towards their pet. They have no right to jeopardise the animal's health like this - because owning a pet does not give you rights, it gives you responsibilities. Tell them that!

Unfortunately, most people couldn't care less what they're doing to themselves with cigarettes, never mind what they're doing to other people or animals. I don't know why - maybe they just don't get it. But that's no reason other people and animals have to suffer for their ignorance. Tell them that too.

Haha if you could just say something to get them to quit.. I think that there would be no smokers left in the whole world.

I don't know the effects, I have read two reports, one saying that it doesn't, and one saying that it does.. Given that 2nd hand smoke affects people negatively
I would think that it would do the same to dogs..

Sit them down calmley, and say second- hand smoking is just as bad for a dog as it is for a human. Some suggestions that I have tried and succeded with my parents =D

1. You are not only killing yourself, but you are killing me with a broken heart.

2. Show them a picture of a black lung- tell them thats what their lungs look like.

3. Show them a picture of mouth cancer- tell them thats what is going to happen.

3. (this is a harsh one) Have you ever thought of commiting suicide? Well, thats what your doing when you smoke.

I know how you feel; this helped a lot for me.

Second hand smoke harms all who breath it. Even the dog. Tell your parents that if they want to kill themselves with their smoke it's one thing but they aren't giving your poor dog the choice!

it can affect him the same as humans, if your parents wont stop for your sake then why would they stop for a dogs sake? like you said you should move out, so why dont you? and take your poor dog with you, its a shame for him because he cant do anything about it.

Good Luck!! If your parents won't not smoke in the house for your health then they won't do it for your dog. It is their house.
