One theory as to why is that the phrase originates from the notion that people hanged themselves by standing on a bucket with a noose around their neck and then kicking the bucket away.

It was a popular way to hang yourself. Throw a rope over a tree limb, fasten it down on one end, make a noose with the other end of the rope, put it around your neck, stand on a bucket, tighten the noose, kick the bucket out from under you.

People who commit suicide often stand on an upended bucket (or used to before cars and guns became so much more common), tie the rope and noose so they just reached the person's neck, then they kicked the bucket out and hanged themselves.

When they hang themselves, they usually stand on a bucket. Then when you "kicked the bucket", and then you die... no other way to put it

(my opinion) Imagine the bucket is full of water which represents your life, well when you kick it over it spills and your life is over.
