If Someone coughs and chokes while on their back did they Asphyxiate or Aspirate?

Not enough information to answer the question. A person coughs due to throat irritation or to clear the throat of phlegm. If the person can cough, the person is not asphyxiating, since an inhalation is necessary to cough (go ahead, try coughing without taking a breath; you won't get much of a cough, and probably not more than one).

Also, if you can breathe through your nose, you are not asphyxiating.

So the test, whether on your back or belly, is, can you breathe? If you are not breathing, hope that someone knows the Heimlich maneuver, assuming the cause is a blocked airway.

If the particle they choked on blocks their breathing then I would think they asphyxiated. However, if the particle went into their lungs, then they aspirated. That's my best guess without googling.

Aspirate. When you asphyxiate it means your airway is being blocked by something. Could be a pillow, bag, etc. To aspirate is to suck in something into your lungs like vomit, water, etc.
