Great question. A priest on EWTN pointed out that the loss of the herd was probably financially devastating for that town, and that is why they begged Him to leave (Matthew 8:34).

There's no Biblical answer. I'd have to answer what I thought.

Here's what we know...Jesus ALLOWED the demons to enter the swine. The swine CHOSE to run to their deaths. If I'd have been there and saw the healing, I wouldn't have had the guts to ask for reimbursement.

Where does it say that Jesus killed the pigs? Where's your evidence? There is none. Your accusation would never stand up in court.
