You are fine removing the plug, and it is only there in the first place to be used if you are hunting..not target shooting. Most states require that when shotgun hunting, you can only carry 3 shells at a time in your shotgun. It is different in various states but the only concern you have to worry about this is if you are HUNTING and your state of residence restricts this.

If you are saying that you have a sick shotgun there is no hope. You will have to pay for the funeral. However if you are saying that you have a six shot shotgun there is some hope. Unless of course that you hunt with it during bird seasons that include migratory birds. And depending on your state there may be other regulations about "unplugged" shotguns. As for removing the wooden dowl(dowel) in the magazine as long as you get the follower and the spring back into it, you shouldn't have any problems. Expect the gun to swing slower as you are adding a lot of weight to the forearm. So the answer is no you did not do anything illegal in removing the plug but you must abide by the state game laws or you will get a citation and could very well lose the shotgun to a game warden. I think the answer from one of the others about carrying the gun with only one shell would be useless even if you had not removed the plug however his note that you should be careful around your shooting buddies is a good warning. A gun is not a toy. Treat it with respect and keep the muzzle in a safe direction at all times.

First of all I believe you have a five shot shotgun. This question seems to hinge on whether you know the answer, but are attempting to see how many odd answers you will receive.

The dowel or plug is inserted to limit the number of shots you can get off while hunting land game and birds. The dowel limits the shot load to three shells. The explanation given to me was that this three shot load gives the game a chance to survive. In addition (At least in Minnesota), don't be in the field hunting and get stopped by a game warden with the dowel out of the shotgun. "No excuse sir!" is the only comeback answer and hope for the best. In further thought, I am very sure that the insistence for a plug or dowel is a Federal duck hunting law that only allows a shotgun to hold three shots at any one time. Good Hunting.

Target shooting (not game) is a different set of rules all together. You can remove the dowel for this activity without concern.

Your shotgun only has that plug to limit the number of shells when you hunt migratory game birds. You are free to put more shells in your shotgun when you go target shooting, but if you ever choose to go bird hunting you need to put that wooden dowl or some other plug that limits your shell capacity to 3 again. As for the rest of these answers, I cant believe some people are so retarded and what is more funny is that they actually answer questions without having a freaking clue to what they are claiming to have knowledge over.

Actually, in some states the plug is only required for hunting migratory birds, and that is a Federal issue.

Using the full magazine for squirrel of deer hunting is perfectly legal in some states. Other states have the three shot maximum for all game.

I hope you didn't cut the tag off your mattress too...because you are going away for a very long time....

J/K call your local fish and game to find out for what game you need a plug. Here in Arizona you only need a plug for water foul.

I hope your skills with gunsmithing are better than they are with spelling. If I get the jist of your question, though, as long as you're not hunting or in a position that looks like you intend to be hunting, you're OK without the plug.

not illegal please don't tell me it is a 6 shot because you keep one in the chamber. Save the dowl for hunting season

My line of thinking is I dont give a damn if it is illegal, the government doesn't tell me what i can and cannot do with my firearms. The constitutuin states the right to bear arms, it dosen't say the right to bear arms as long as they only hold three shells !
