how much max would it cost to rebuild or replace the a/c in a 1984 dodge ram van.

took it to the worker and they charged it up, and it ran for 3 yrs, then the a/c went out, next time (old R13 free-on) we charged it up, and it only lasted 3 weeks.
*know it has a leak, but don't know where.
So, i'm sure it's outdated, and not legal to fix in CA, but what can i do? just charge it up on the road trip myself every week?

I'm just wondering what the most expensive way and most affordable options i have would be.

please reccomend and give details, and if you need more info, i will edit and add, and would appreciate if you would edit and add onto yours. Otherwise, it's the Camry for the Roadtrip and would really love to take the Van w/the BeD! and house on wheels!!
*i know it's a gas hog, and I have to bath on the road, and all that, i'm a hygene freak and seasoned dry dirt camper.

Help me out with the A/C please.
and you can check out my other question about the van too. ty

Lilly The thing is that r12 is still available but you need to find a shop that does a/c rebuilds so you can still enjoy the system and never never use r134 it doesn't cool quite as well even in the hotter areas of california like the deserts out in mojave and desert hot springs and all the rest of those places.Get it fixed now so you can enjoy it later on.

If you can find someone that will change it over to 134 without raping you that is the way to go. Depends on what the leak is on how much the total would be. Not sure about Ca laws but other states it is legal to change it over.

do you know its illegal to have r 12 yourself unless your a certified mechanic or refrigeration person. where are you getting the stuff? your best bet is just to drive without air as it will be to expensive to fix and or replace.
