I want to apply for a passport to leave the country for Australia next year for a honeymoon. How does a person go about to see if their identity was stolen? Who do you contact, who do you talk to? Thank you! :)

You should get your credit report and review it. If you are concerned about identity theft you should take a preventitive measure. More than 10 million people are victims of identity theft each year. If you want to learn more about identity theft and what you can do to prevent it you should visit http://www.your-credit-solution.com/idtheftinaction.htm . I use their identity theft services and two weeks ago when I was on vacation in Alaska I was notifed that my identity was trying to be compromised. They informed me the theives were unable to obtain my information. Without this service my vacation would have been a disaster.

Are you in the US? Just take the proper documents (birth certificate and drivers license) to a passport acceptance agency in your area and fill out an application. You will also need two passport photos.

Having had your identity stolen shouldn't affect it, unless the other person got a passport in your name and ss#. Do you have a reason to think that your identity was stolen? If you haven't gotten something weird, like a letter from the IRS asking you to pay taxes on your job 1000 miles from where you live, or turndowns for credit because they say you have accounts that you don't have, you're probably OK.

You can request a copy of your credit report for free by going to annualcreditreport.com - if nothing unexplainable shows up there, quit worrying.

hmmm... good question... You may want to check out the national credit bureaus, they would definitely know.
