I was just wondering if its normal for a kitten to lose a bit of weight when switching from milk to canned food, ive been raising them myself, someone abandoned them on my doorstep, anyways, they're around 4 weeks old, i believe, and are just now switching to canned food, the kittens have lost a little weight recently, and i mean they feel really skinny. Is this normal? These are my first kittens, they do gobble down the canned food and are now drinking water seperate from a bowl. Any help would do. Thanks :)

Add the kitty milk for about 4 more weeks. They still need those nutrients.

First thing is to make sure they're wormed, so there aren't little parasites in there gobbling up all the food they're eating! Kittens need to be wormed age 2,4,8 and 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old and every 3 months thereafter. Go to your vets to get some proper kitten wormer.

Secondly, are you feeding them kitten food? Adult cat food doesn't have nearly enough of the calories they need. They should also still be on kitten replacement milk until they're about 6 or 7 weeks old. Let them have as much kitten food as they like at this stage, and still put kitten milk replacement out for them - get them to suckle it from a bottle if they're not taking it themselves. By the time they're 8 weeks old they can be on kitten food exclusively, and should remain on this until they're about a year old.

You can get some cat milk at the pet store, put some in a bowl with dry food and let it get soft! that should help them fatten up once it has a lot of calories. they need the nutrients from the milk and kitten food, not just adult canned food.
If there eating fine, they may be sick. I realize you don't want to run out to the vet and see what's the matter--once there not really yours and your kinda burdened already.

it's kinda hard to judge, because it might just be the transition from the mother or the new enviroment.

You might consider taking them to a shelter and letting them take over--you've ben kind to them already, but they could be ill if there losing weight.

or

Watch them, weigh them if you can, and try to find them homes...

a million. Take them to the vet who help you recognize what you're able to do and in case you sense you could no longer improve them, ask them who can. 2. you could improve them on your guy or woman. purchase puppy bottles and KMR(kitten milk replacer) they sell at wal-mart or puppy'clever. purchase a puppy mattress and electric heating blanket and placed it on the mattress, yet basically to cover 0.5 of the mattress, then cover it with an old towel. that's so in the event that they sense too warm, they'd creep away to cool down. side word: the bottle says make a small hollow; it rather desires to be a touch great hollow, use scissors to snip off the suited of the nipple. 3. in case you feed them diligently and shop them heat, they are going to be large, they shouldn't go through any long term well being issues, they're going to easily decide for supplements whilst they get the right age to consume. The poop could be runny; it should not be good until they consume good nutrition. Your doing solid so a techniques, solid luck!

1) make sure they've been wormed (see vet, they're so little & fragile)

2) they probably could use the kitten milk for a couple weeks longer; perhaps just as a supplement

3) make sure the canned food your giving them is for kittens for that extra nutrients!
