For Pete's sake automobile insurance is NOT mandatory in ALL states.
If you are not a claims adjuster or you ARE a claims adjuster who THINKS they know the answer to this question, don't answer. Please stop giving people false information.
Granted car insurance should be mandatory in all states but it is not. So many people assume it required in all states because it should be required but it's not.
I handle a ton of claims in Wisconsin and trust me car insurance is not mandatory there. If you are at-fault for an accident without insurance you will lose your license until you pay the damages but insurance is not mandatory. They call it Financial Responsibility.

Well you wouldnt go to jail. But you'd definitely get fined and they could possibly take action against your license.
Insurance is now required in every single state. The only thing that makes North Carolina special is that the state runs a "facility pool" for anyone that has one accident or one violation. Its a bit peculiar, but generally speaking NC has good rates, the 4th lowest in the country actually.
Get insured, get quotes online if need be. This is something that can hurt you, without a doubt.

Auto Insurance is required in every state in the USA.
Exception ... you file some paperwork with the state to show that you have like a million dollars in the bank, so you don't need insurance.
In some states you are not required to have proof of insurance on you, but more and more are getting that way.
So if the police stop you, and know your insurnace has expired, they could confiscate the car & get it towed some place, where you can only pick it up when you prove you have good insurance.
We are not there yet, but the day is rapidly coming when the DMV computer systems will talk to the Auto Insurance company computers. Purpose of this is
* Insurance company knows license plate # of cars they insure
* DMV knows when auto insurance expires
* State police then have list of license plates on cars driving around with expired insurance ... if see the car, arrest the driver

RE: Is renters insurance required by law in north carolina? I am moving into an apartment and the landlord said renters insurance is required and gave us a company who would give us a discount. Same as what would happen in Georgia. A ticket and possibly having car impounded since you cannot drive without insurance.
