is there a check engine light???
if so do the key dance----start with the car off turn the key to the on pos without starting the car go. turn the key on, off, on,off, on and stop. there should be codes
but it sounds like a bad cam or crank sensor
or if you want even more info about this and anything about your car you can go to dodgeintrepid.net/forums and post in the 1st gen section

Try to run a diagnostic check on it, it could be EGR is not working properly. Just a thought I'm not a mechanic but my friends car did the same thing last week. Does your car idle a little rough too?, or does the car act up more the hotter it is? if so have the EGR checked. Good luck

I would bet it is it if one of three things . a bad crank or cam
sensor, this would set a code in the computer and turn on the
engine light. Or a bad fuel pump this would not set a code.

could be either the starter or alternator....if those two work check the distributor and the cap with all the spark plugs and tighten all wires connected to the battery. Alsomight be the fuel/air compression, but hope it isnt

I have seen this issue in the past, high idle, failure to pass E test. The Map was the problem. It worked, but was for a 2.7, and not a 3.3. Which makes sense, it controls fuel delivery. Check the part number, to make yours is for a 3.3. Hope this helps.

If the check engine light doesn't come on while it's running bad, it's the pump. all sensors throw a code. The pump doesn't.

it could be a fuel pressure problem, or a combination of that plus the cat being partially clogged, or even the o2 sensor

Swap the ASD relay out with the horn relay and see if it does any good.
