Do you support this title above and beyond the other titles out there? Or is the Ring title simply a media tag? I'm doing an article on the history of championships in boxing for AOL Sports (called "The Alphabet Bandits") and I would like a fan concensus. Thanks!

More importantly, do you recognize the Ring Magazine titleholders as the REAL world champions?

Except for a scandal under founder Nat Fleischer's son-in-law, Nat Loubet, the Ring has always been the gold standard. It remains the best and most serious boxing publication on the planet. I think the Ring magazine's champion is THE champion.

For the most part yes. But certain fighters who are semi retired I don't think should still have the title especially when they don't fight at the given weight class (Bernard Hopkins) I think he is the best but he fought a year ago and then fought Winky Wright at a catch weight. This was the only time I had a problem with the ring magazine title. I think it is good for boxing and gives boxers the incentive to unify bouts and not to duck other fighters. I believe Bernard is worthy of the light heavyweight title for beating Tarver but I think it should be up for grabs again after he retires or after a year of not defending in that class.

I generally don't recognize any of the many sanctioning bodies or The Ring magazine. But I appreciate what the magazine does in trying to establish a top guy for each division. Obviously boxing needs serious overhauling, with a boxer union and only one sanctioning body with some kind of independent oversight over both. We just need Mike Tyson to make good on his pledge to murder Don King to get that ball rolling.

Ring Mag. has more credibility than the alphabet souper's, but they are also there to sell magazines. I would like to see a panel of fight guys like Merchant and Sugar, and maybe some former champions like Frazier and Hagler decide who is number one.

No as titles should be won in the ring not awarded by a panel of judges, as there is always the high possibility of an element of bias towards certain fighters over others.
