The smaller the dog, the smaller the poo obviously. But what a stupid thing to say, your wife does not like dogs that poo a lot. This is a normal bodily function for all living species, even your wife. If she doesnt want her garden messed up and presumably not the house, she is not right for a dog. Get a cat or hamster instead because she sounds like the type that will get a dog to satisfy the children's wishes, and then when her house and garden isn't squeaky clean anymore, what with dog bowls in the kitchen, pet bed and toys etc. the dog will be rehomed or worse still abandoned completely.

You dont say how old the kids are. Any dog is going to poop It depends on what kind of dog food you feed as to how much. Cheaper dog food makes the most and runny Poop. If you buy a good brand of dog food it well be formed and easily cleaned up. Can dog food also makes runny mess. Also Things to think about before getting a dog small dogs dont do well out side because that are an easy target for other animals and have trouble ad justing to weather changes. You can go to puppyfind.com and look up different breeds and how much care thay reguire. Good Luck

Well, your wife rules so perhaps you ought to talk this one out a little more to decide if you really DO want a dog. LOL. Seriously, if mom is happy, everyone is happy.
That said, I have have two dogs on the extreme ends of the size spectrum. A miniscule 4.5 lb chihuahua and a gentle giant Great Dane.
I have TRAINED them both and this helps a lot! Whatever dog you choose you must have a plan for training. A book I highly recommend and that you can download for FREE online is BEFORE You Get A Dog by Dr. Ian Dunbar. You can find his book at http://www.siriuspuppy.com .
Both my dogs are excellent with the kids. Both dogs I do not leave for long lengths of time with the kids unattended so I can always be there to make corrections to either dogs or kids if needed. It does seem a bother to me. I do it as naturally as a mother would manage all her children and without thinking.
Don't believe the blanket statements from people that chihuahuas and kids don't mix. My excellent Chi grew up with our children from the time my sencond child was a baby. My dog knows that babies mean all things wonderful and is terrific with them. Training is key - for both dog and children.
Poop wise, the Dane is definately the bigger pooper but the advantage is that I can find them! My chihuahua poops smaller than a cat and often leaves poops impossible to find - even when I watch him do it - go figure! Not fun when the kids are playing and they inadvertently discover a "surprise". There are more complaints about the tiny poo than the big stuff.
You CAN train your dog to go in a certain spot to make clean up easier. You must be willing to spend time training your dog in any case. Planning for it makes it seems a little less overwhelming. I chose a local training club to train me and my dogs.
Oh, and don't listen to those who say not to get a dog. If both you and your wife want one then I'm sure you can find the perfect fit for your family.
I find the Bichon Frise and Shitzu suggestions intreaging. Both are breeds known or bred for being good with kids. They both need hair cuts though.
Decide what other traits you and your wife want and don't want in a dog and your choices will quickly begin to narrow. You know, long hair or short, shedding or non-shedding, high energy, moderate, or low?
Good luck.

"Poo" all depends on what you feed the dog. Any dog on a crappy diet is going to "Poo" alot.
My raw fed dogs (100lb lab, 40lb lab mix, and bel mal pup) defecate once a day. There waste is pretty small in amount, and what waste there is dries up and crumbles in the sun in a day or two. GREAT poo for gardens.
So find a breed that fits your lifestyle, and then feed a high quality diet. (Science Diet, Eukanuba, Purina, Iams and any of your better known and store brands, are not included in the list of foods considered high quality)

You wouldn't judge other family members by the way they/how much they poop. So it will be hard to find a dog who poops little enough for you. Unless it is a very tiny dog, but that probably won't be best for children because kids have a tendency to play too rough for the little thing.
Are the children expected to have sole responsibility of the dog? If so, don't get a dog.
If you don't like picking up poop, there are companies that come to your house and pick it up and dispose of it for you--research that method (for dogs big and small).

best dog for children depends on how well you're able to train it.
and as far as the poo, whatever dog eats the least amount produces less poo.
so, ya know, starve your dog because your wife is too lazy to shovel once in a while. that makes sense....
seriously.
how much do you poo?
whatever you eat.
think, much?

The only dogs who are not gonna poo, trample plants ect are statues. Diet has more to go with poo volume than breed (given similar size - logically smaller dogs poo less than large ones)

i won a great dog the other day. it came out of a machine at the fair ground. a lovely little siberian husky. dont have to walk it, dont have to feed it and because it doesnt have to feed, it doesn't poo in the slightest. the best dog i could have ever found.
if you want a dog that doesnt pass feacal matter, then well yea your not going to find one! all dogs have to go the toilet same as you or i. smaller dogs mean less food means smaller poos but they still dog it. but at the same time, small dogs are generally nervous around children and arent the best!
your in a lose lose situation. my recommendation, go to weymouth in dorset and in the arcade there get yourself one of the dogs i did

Labrador. Feed the best quality DOG food and surprisingly you feed less and get less out of the back end. In view of the comments about your wife and and the garden.....your next posted question will be "How can I stop a dog from burning my Lawn?"

How about a stuffed toy?
If you can’t deal with the poo, then you really need to skip getting a dog. Part of being a pet parent is cleaning up after them.
