My insurance is under my mom's name so when it canceled, I didn't know about it. My boyfriend got a no insurance ticket in my car because I forgot to put an updated card in my jeep. Now, I thought I still had insurance so I went up to my insurance agency and told them what happened and they printed up another card for me. They didn't tell me that it had canceled the previous day, the day he got the ticket. So he took it up to the police station and the ticket was dropped. Suddenly, he gets a court date in the mail saying he has to show up or he's going to jail. I went up to clear it up with my insurance agency and that's how I found out it had canceled. I was told by another insurance agent that since they didn't tell me it was canceled and printed out another card that it was still valid and the ticket should be dropped. Anyone know what I can do?

Wellllll...........

Considering that the insurance was in your MOM's name? They don't have to notify YOU about anything.

Your boyfriend should show up to court. You didn't say it was about insurance...but if it is.....he will need to show his OWN proof of insurance. Most states have financial responsibility laws that are pretty specific. Some even require proof when you go to get your license.

So - you need to check out the financial responsibility laws - and find out what the pending court issue is.

Also - so you don't get a ticket too...it's probably a good idea to go and get your own insurance so you are not reliant upon someone else to hold up their end of the insurance bargain.

Goodluck to you guys!

YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible to know if your vehicle has insurance on it or not. Do you want your agent to hold your hand too?

If your policy expired there is no reason they would notify you- you should know your policy period.

You should be lucky that your boyfriend didnt hit someone (or get hit) and then youd have a whole other problem on your hands ( i mean.. unless you have 50 thousand dollars laying around for damages youc aused...)

Be an adult.. and be responsible for your actions and face the consequences that you get.

Your boyfriend was never covered driving your car unless your Mother had a policy stating he was covered. Many companies are advertising covering anyone who drives your car but, most stste the person must be over 25 years old or an immediate family member.
