English in general is a very difficult language to learn for foreigners because there are no agreements, etc. with English as there are in most other languages. I think British English would be easier to learn for foreigners because they seem to be more focused on grammer rather than mood, etc. Americans have a lot of slang that can put off a certain vibe to reflect cultural background whereas British people tend to stay away from that.

I'm originally from Italy, i came to the USA when i was 4, so it was relatively easy for me to pick up, within a month of being here i was already speaking it, and i have now completely lost my accent.
My parents on the other hand still do not speak fluently even though they can understand most of the language, and my siblings who came here in their teens have accents.
I would believe English is hard to learn because of the weird spellings that some words have, and all the grammar rules and how those rules contradict themselves at times.

Native English speaker here. I've been told by co-workers from places as different as eastern Europe, central Africa, and the Middle East that English is not difficult to learn, although some of the spelling can be confusing.
This doesn't surprise me. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world speak English as their second, third, or even fourth language, so -- how hard can it be?

Is really esay to get the basics of the language, since even with a heavy accent most Americans will understand you; however, to master the language is really difficult because English has silent letters, words that sound the same like THEN and THEM or its and it's(it is) that will confuse many people. Also, it has many idioms that. It is not a uniform set of grammar rules. in or on many times violate the rules.
Compare to Spanish, many sentences have the verb and the subject inverted. Like
The White House is in W. D.C.
La Casa Blanca esta en W. D. C.

Yes, English is among the hardest languages to learn, which is probably why so many native-speakers do it badly. Part of the problem is that neither the grammar nor the phonics are standard. A large number of the verbs are irregular, as opposed to Spanish or French where only a few are, and we have many ways of spelling the same sound, which makes it impossible to know how any word is spelled just from hearing it. Fan, for example, could just as easily be phann--without even getting to vowel sounds. The other problem is the huge vocabulary, some 500,000 words, at last count. Most other languages have around 100K to 200K.

For a European speaking a Germanic language (such as Dutch, German or Norwegian), basic English is extremely simple to learn. For someone speaking a Romance language (such as French or Spanish) it's slightly more difficult although English shares a lot of vocabulary with French. For someone speaking a Slavic tongue (Russian, Polish), English is harder still.
For someone speaking an Asian language such as Mandarin or Japanese, English is extremely difficult. Just as Mandarin or Japanese would be more difficult for an English or French speaker than for a speaker of an Asian tongue.

it is at first, i learned english when i was 17. I didn't know many words when i first came to the US as an exchange student, but a year after i went back to my country i moved up to MO. go to college. I can think and dream in english. When you start dreaming and thinking in your second language that's a great sign that means you are really learning it.
