Yeah, I know it seems like a grand idea, but $2000 for a pet store dog? No.

Pet store animals run the gamut from quality animals from respectable breeders to the bottom of the barrel puppy mill run off. And believe me, no pet store is going to admit to the latter.

They make their sales with picture windows of adorable little balls of fur dancing and barking and it is irrestible, but not a good idea.

Even if they are bred up to standard, the conditions a pet store puppy lives in puts it at substantially more risk of infections that can create a very expensive problem.

All in all, if you want a yorkie, find a yorkie breeder, don't go with the impulse pet store buy, the chances of heartache and massive expense are way too high.

And if you are willing to take a risk like the one you'd be taking at the pet shop, you'd do a lot more good adopting a dog from a shelter that needs a home rather than perpetuating a pet store's business that usually doesn't have the animal's best interest at heart.

When you choose to purchase a puppy from a store (and some breeders for that matter), you need to be aware of the fact that puppies from pet stores come from puppy mills, which are cruel. You can learn more about puppy mills from the US Humane Society website at www.hsus.com. I would recommend instead researching your option to adopt a puppy. If you are patient enough, you will find a puppy on petfinder.com and you can feel good about adopting a dog that not only costs less, but also helps the rescue organizations out there that work tirelessly to save all of the abused, neglected, and unwanted dogs out there. Also keep in mind that the $2000 that the pet store wants for the purchase of the puppy is only the beginning of the expenses you will incur with this dog.

Also, I agree with what someone else said about your Great Dane. If you introduce a Yorkie puppy to your Great Dane, he could inadvertently hurt or kill the puppy. Yorkie pups are extremely tiny and fragile. In fact, many Yorkie pups are severly injured or die each year from being dropped by people!!! Also, Yorkies are very active dogs, which is the polar opposite of a Great Dane. Your family must be prepared for a dog that is very high strung and often suffers from severe separation anxiety. When I got my pups, my dogs chewed holes in my carpet and walls. They chewed up several shoes and did permanent damage to several furniture items. This was all due to the fact that I was inexperienced with the breed and they did not like being left home alone. My dogs are three years old now and are just now comfortable with staying home alone for extended periods of time. The worst thing that could happen is that you decide to purchase an expensive dog that you will end up "getting rid of" because you and your family are not prepared for all that is involved with taking care of a Yorkie.

I understand how you love this little puppy. You are taking a HUGE risk when you purchase a pet store dog. You support puppy mills, get a dog that is going to have some serious health issues, and behavioral issues. The better bet is to find a good breeder in your area. Check out the parents and how the pups are being raised. A good breeder will want vet references and to see how the little one will behave and react to your home environment. It will be expensive, but worth it in the end. You can also think about contacting your local rescue for Yorkies. You’ll get an adult that needs a home. The rescue will have to do home visits, etc and it will not be free. You have to pay, normally a set fee, for medical expenses, and foster care, etc.

Donnnn't get this puppy from the pet store. It's from a puppy mill and it's parents are being neglected at this very moment. $2,000 for a Yorkie is toooo expensive anyway. Around here you can get a nice Yorkie for $350+ from a good breeder. Just check ads in the paper and on the internet for Yorkie puppies and you'll find ones that are just as sweet (and cheaper) as the one at the pet store.
I agree with the other person too, try Petfinder.com! Those animals there would like a nice home, and they're just as cute! (Of course, it might not be a puppy, but it could still be young.)

Never buy a puppy from the pet store, that only supports the puppy mills. Check out the Humane Society of the United States for information on what goes on with puppy mills

Please rescue a Yorkie Pup. It will cost you far less and not contribute to the hideous puppy mill that most likely produced that 'doggie in the window.' Go to Petfinder:

http://www.petfinder.com/index.html

You will find HUNDREDS of Yorkshire Terriers waiting for loving homes. Some are puppies. Please help us to end the horror of puppy mills- DON'T BUY FROM A PET STORE!

Thank you so much!

You don't say how old you are, but that is a LOT of money.

I'd suggest proposing a deal -- for every dollar you contribute, your dad matches it. Which means you would have to come up with $600 from your job, babysitting, etc. This would show your dad your willingness to work hard and be disciplined to meet a goal for something you want badly.

I also think you should offer to contribute to some or all of the cost of the dog's upkeep -- like its food, vet bills, etc. Since you want responsibility for the animal, you should be willing to make sure it has all of the necessities.

first of all i have to say to you and your mom, you have a great dane! He would probebly step on the yorkie and kill it!!! Not a good choice for a second dog, Yorkie's are very delcate dogs and only be in houses with other small dogs or animals. They are very klingey and need a lot of attention, They are very loyal dogs and i beleive you should do research about buying from a pet store.

Why, UR dad probably knows that ALL puppies from petstores are from puppymills and he doesn't want to support things like that. Doesn't want to give his money over to someone who is abusing animals. No responsible breeder would allow their puppies to be sold in a petstore, no matter what the store says, they are from a puppymill..

Check rescue and the pound.

Unless the dog comes with a solid gold collar, the price is too much. Maybe you should visit the local animal shelter for a dog at a reasonable price instead of mortgaging the house to buy one.
