People do that a lot lately. I don't care about the extra work when it's slow, but they have to be rinsed out so our garbage doesn't get stinky. There are lots of garbage bins outside so I wonder how people got the idea that the cashier is the garbage collector?

Wundt, maybe there aren't enough garbage cans around where you live, but we don't have that problem here.

It is not appropriate; one should look for a trash can.

If I have some trash I sometimes ask cashiers if they have a trash can I can use. I would never just hand it to them without asking, but I have never encountered anyone who seemed bothered by the question.

I can understand that you don't want to be bothered and would prefer people found another place to put their trash. However, I think this is preferable to trash being left on displays or on the floor. Finding a trashcan in a store (or even outside of one) is often difficult or inconvenient. Many people frustrated at not being able to locate a trash can will just take the easy option and drop it where ever they can. And, you (as an employee of the store) may well end up picking it up anyway.

I will from time to time ask a cashier if they can throw something away for me. I am a very considerate person and at the time I am asking I am not being rude or lazy. Notice I say I ask if they can. I would never ask them if it is something that is nasty or dirty. Normally they have a trash can or little wastebasket that they just toss it right into. Even at the drive thru while making space i may ask for a cup to be tossed (very, very rare occurrence but i have done it). I do keep in mind that i don't want to hand someone something that is all nasty. Just as a friendly sign of customer service why not just toss it if it is something that you just don't wanna touch, it's nasty and/or dirty politely let the person know where the nearest trashcan is. i would say that the person is being rude if the trash is dirty and nasty.

Sometimes when I am with my niece or nephew they will be eating something and drop it on the floor... I always pick it up and ask the nearest worker if there is a trash can. I never expect the person to take the piece of whatever for me. I can do it myself. If they offer I usually say that its dirty or something. I have done it at a drive thru place where the guy asked if he could take an empty bottle because I was trying to clear room for drinks. I think people are just lazy.

however, I try not to ask favors of strangers because I don't particularly like doing them... yadda yadda yadda... I believe in karma.

No, I take my trash to a trash or garbage can. I suppose a person who's carrying several bags, not pushing a cart, out the door might need to get rid of a cup before picking them up, but that's the only excuse.

The cashier might suggest to people that they take the garbage out to the bins. Maybe people haven't noticed the bins.

Just don't take the trash. It's easy enough to point people in the direction of an outdoor trash container while adding that you are not allowed to take food or drink containers. As long as you're taking the trash, people will continue to hand it over.
