We have been offered a great (and steady) job in Detroit. Where are the best suburbs to live for people with kids who are interested in great schools and family atmosphere? Also, what is the commute like? If you grew up in or are living in a city and love it I would love to hear about it.

I think that there are plenty of good neighborhoods around Detroit, but it depends on what price and type of living you are making. You couples have been moving into Berkley and Royal Oak. I hope you like sports cause we have the best sports town in the world.

Detroit area can be a great place to raise a family and enjoy. If you want a diverse learning atmosphere, I recommend Royal Oak, Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is about 40 minutes from Detroit, but it is a very well educated city, and has quite a few colleges and universities in the area. If you want an actual suburb, Royal Oak is good because it has a pretty decent 30-late 40'ish nightlife and the downtown is in development. The taxes will be quite a bit higher in these places, but you will have well-rounded educated kids and enjoy yourselves when you're not working. Be advised, that if you live anywhere in Oakland County that the 696 commute will be a nightmare! If possible, avoid needing to take 696 to work everyday.
