Hi, I'm 15 and have had braces for six years (yes I know, ridiculously long.) Anyway, I have recently began to mature a bit and have been wearing my elastics regularly and have been brushing my teeth regularly. I'm due to get them off in a few months. However, I've noticed these white marks around my braces, which I've found out are 'tooth decalcification' marks. I got these a few years ago when I wasn't so religious about oral hygiene. Is there anyway to get rid of them? What can I do?

What?? Are you serious? These things are PERMANENT! Are you sure everything around them can't be bleached so it's even???

Yes, this decalcification is permanent (sorry!) and whitening these areas will only cause them to get whiter and or decalcify furthur. Your best option is to see how they look once the braces come off and decide how to treat them then. You may end up having white fillings that will match the rest of the tooth surface to replace the decalcified areas. What you can do now is make sure your are keeping the areas clean and rinse nightly with a fluoride rinse (ACT, or Fluorigard) or ask your orthodontist for a prescription for a high concentration Fluoride toothpaste... Wish I had better news...

I'm afraid those don't go away. My dentist said that if you whiten your teeth, those spots will only get brighter. If it's really bothering you, you could look into veneers, but those are quite pricey. Otherwise, all you can do is take special care to prevent more marks from appearing!

I'm pretty sure those are permanent. You can get your teeth whitened and that sometimes helps them disappear (but gat be tough on your teeth) or some other cosmetic procedure.

THE ONLY REALISTIC THING TO DO IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY AS BLEACHING WILL AKE THESE SPOTS BRIGHTER. THESE CANNOT BE ELIMINATED ONLY COVERED UP.
