I have a 1984 Cadillac DeVille with a big, nasty V8 in it that within the past six months started to "surge" while sitting at a light. The surge sounds similar to when a fan motor or something kicks on, (Like I had in another car.) but it yanks the car forward if in drive. Really hard. I have noticed it doing the same surging while in park as well. The engine will idle fine, but the idle will run way up for a second and come back down below normal idle speed. Lately, the car is dying when you stop too quickly at some lights or if you pull it into reverse or drive too fast from a standstill. I have noticed that the car dying is usually on the end of the surges that the engine has as the idle comes down below normal idle speed. I've gotten under the hood and watched the accelerator chain get pulled back whenever it surges and I have no idea what to do about it. I'm thinking of buying the repair book for it, but I figured I would ask here first. Thanks for your time.

Make sure all vacuum lines are sealing good.If the engine is runnig excessively rich and dies at stop signs it may have sinking float sydrome in the carburetor and may need to be rebuilt. To buy a repair book is a very good idea.Consider every ones` answers and check it out.

The first things I would look for and use a combustible spray while idling to help find are vacuum leaks. I would then check for any exhaust leaks that are coming from the AIR reactor or pump. Then check through all the secondary ignition components for corrosion or carbon tracking. These had tons of problems. Good luck.
