I have a serious passion for golf and usually end up watching every single shot on Sundays whenever a tourney is on. I've always wanted to become competitive in golf and eventually go to Q-school or try out on the Nationwide tour in the future. I have a good situation right now where I have a lot of time that I can spend on golf right now and I would like to take advantage of it. I am thinking of getting a part time job at a golf course so that I can play golf for free and hit balls.

I want to set up a five year plan where I can get to scratch in two to three years. In the 3rd and fourth year maybe start using a swing coach to get me over the last little hump and then in the fifth year start trying out in competitive tourneys.

I feel like i have some natural ability and I like to learn about the game and my game. I have shot in the 80s before but I haven't had an 80s round in the last few years. Does anyone think that this is completely idiotic or is it a possibility?

You really need to practice.Shooting in the 80's isn't even close to making the PGA tour.If you have the time,go out and practice a lot.

It's not idiotic. It will just be very difficult. But even if you don't make it to the tour, you will be a better golfer.

Greg Norman went from a 27 handicap to scratch in two years, so it can be done!

Part of the answer depends on your age. If you're under 21 or so, your chances will be much better. If you're closer to 30, you probably have too many bad habits to overcome.

As difficult as the physical aspects will be, the mental aspects will be even tougher and more important. There are a lot of people who have the physical abilities, but just can't cut it emotionally.

There are a lot of amateur handicap tournaments. Enter a few of them, and see how you handle the pressure of being in a tournament. Some players crack under pressure, other rise to the occastion.

If your 5 year plan is what you just said, then it will never happen. Your only chance is to BEGIN the process with a PGA professional instead of working yourself and then going to them for help down the road.

You will develop bad habits that are much easier to be fixed in the beginning as compared to playing with ruts in your move for a couple of years and then battling against what feels comfortable later.

I used to play on the buy.com tour before I started teaching golf for a living, and we always chuckled at people who thought that they could get to a competetive level quickly, and especially on their own. It just doesn't happen.

Go to my company's website and begin here. You will at least be able to find out what you need to work on and perhaps you might find out the truth to how long it takes to improve to that level.

Many birdies...

I dont know man, I am a freshman in high school. I made the varsity team playing 3rd seed. I consistently shoot mid to low 70s and I'm not even sure that is good enough. I play at a county club everyday. I wouldn't count on it but it can be done.

One flaw I see in your plan is waiting until year 3-4 for a swing coach. Why not get off on the right foot now?

As for the goal, good luck with that. Maybe I'll get your autograph some day.

Why would you wait 5 years to join competitive tourneys? They have plenty of regional amature tournaments that you can test your mettle in and they are broken up by handicap. If you did those regularly then you could see whether or not you've got the right stuff.

Sure it is possible. All you have to do is practice, practice, practice. I think you need to start seeing a swing coach right away. You have to pretty much eat, sleep, and breathe golf. You have to practice tons, hit tons of golf balls, and you have to improve.

Good call on getting the job at the course. That way you can have access to the course and hit balls for free.

Good Luck

it possible for you to make but you will have to work hard and play a lot if you are not breaking 90 now, i would recomend getting a coach or at least taking regular lessons right away if you really want to give a shot, and also you didnt mention how old you are, if you are over 30 its going to be really difficult
