It seems to be common practice for telemarketers to keep trying to sell you on something after you already said no. Do you hate that? What can we do about it?

Oops I meant "won't take no for an answer."

I had an 800 number calling up to 9 times a day a couple of weeks ago. Every day. After about 4 days I finally answered and said "Do you know about harassment laws? You've called my house 36 times this week" haven't heard from them since. I've done it to people who try to keep me on the phone too. Telemarketers are afraid of being accused of harrassment!!

It's happened to me many a times, and yes I hate it. I am nice to them because I can only imagine how many people are rude and just plain old mean to them. You know what I say when they won't take no for an answer? I say something in the lines of "This is a really bad time ... I was just about to go use the bathroom, I really don't feel good." It's crude, but oh boy does it work! It usually makes the telemarketer feel uncomfortable and they back off. And plus, if they have a good sense of humor, they'll laugh. So I would have made their day, hopefully.

Peace and Happiness.

I don't hate it at all, because I don't give them a chance to not take No for an answer.

If it sounds like a telemarketer, I ask, "Is this a solicitation?"
If they say Yes or otherwise do not come out with a defined No, then I interrupt their "but ..." and say, "We do not accept solicitations by phone. Please feel free to mail us something" and then I hang up.

Usually, I don't answer a call to begine with if I don't recognise the number or if it's listed as "unavailable".
If it's important, the caller will leave a message.

My husband simply hangs up without a word if he thinks it's a telemarketer.

I used to work for a telemarketing company and we were told by our bosses never to take no for an answer. The telemarketer has to be insistant to keep his job and to keep an income. If it is really bothering you that much dont lose your temper, calmly say "i have already stated im not interested" and then hang up. if it is an at home visit say "i have already stated im not interested" and then ask them to leave. If they refuse then they are breaking the law and you can press charges. But don't be an *** to them - they are just trying to survive like the rest of us.

I would tell them that I wasn't interested, and if they persisted and wouldn't give up, I would hang up. Unfortunately, I found that they usually called me right back. One day, I told them that I needed to check with my husband to see what he thought and I would let them know. Then I left the phone off the hook for the next five minutes and went on with my own business. When I came back, the telemarketer was gone, and they never called back again.

I'm posting a link to a site that will give you the necessary legal infomation and contact form to make them leave you alone.

The greatest thing about telemarketers is that they are very gullible, because they get paid for the sales they make. I'm from a small town just north-west of Toronto, and with it being such a multicultural city, we get a lot of telemarketers that barely know how to speak English. When they try and sell their product to you for the fifth time or w/e, make it a game. When they ask for your name give them an 80's celebrity name (Bobby Brown works good) and ask 10 minutes worth of questions about the product, then say "no thanks, it sounds like crap, I don't want it, goodbye".

Another funny thing to do to them is that if you have a grudge against one of your neighbors, make the order, but tell them you moved, and that way they will drive all the way to your neighbors house and get nothing but a "we didn't order this!"

I've learned to talk faster than the telemarketers. I don't let them get a word in edgewise. I say what I have to say to them and end the conversation with "Thank you very much. Goodbye" and I hang up the phone. I'm quite sure I'm one of their nicer calls for the day.........

Get an answering machine and screen your calls. Telemarketers know about this trick and hang up immediately, since it would only make them lose time.

You can interrupt their pitch and tell them to remove your number from their marketing list. Then hang up. Don't wait for a reply, as they are trained not to take no for an answer. They're just doing their job, but that doesn't mean you have to listen to them. As a former TMer I would rather have someone hang up on me then go through the script for nothing. Believe me!

They do when I say it because I cut off their speech and announce my disinterest as soon as I know the purpose of their call, followed by my promptly hanging up. I'm not rude to them, but I am absolutely and immeditaely direct in saying no. I usually give them time enough to say "well thank you anyhow." No bones about it when I'm not interested. I'm tired of the wishy washy feeling that comes from not having the nerve to just say no.
