I don't know how many websites which say that the illegal aliens don't want to learn English and have no desire to assimilate...all they want is money and more money to send back to their country of origin. And because the USA is BENDING to THEIR will, it just makes it worse.

US Citizens end up needing to learn spanish if they are in the medical field because if they don't and something happens it is on THEIR shoulders...not that of the interpreter. Same thing for school and any other number of people who are in public service jobs.

What about when the cop says "STOP!" and the illegal alien keeps running and ends up getting shot? It is then the COPS fault? That is what has happened numerous times and people blame those who are only doing their jobs, while the REAL culprit runs loose just because they don't want to assimilate!

Honey, there are a million excuses but no reason! They choose to be hostile and violent, they want to exterminate the whites and the blacks, too! I'm sure you've seen the videos of our desert and just looking at that can tell you the caliber of people that are coming here! No respect for anything, anyone, or our laws. If they get killed because they don't know what stop means, oh well? We must get them out of our nation before their corruption rubs off onto our children! I want the USA to be the great place to live that it has always been. We still outnumber them by far, can we become deputized or sanctioned by ICE? Because apparently, we are going to have to do it. Our chicken sh*t president wants their oil as much as he wants control of the Middle East!!!!!!

Most of those who demand we learn spanish, speak little to no English. There are English classes available, free in most cases, everywhere. We pay to teach their children English in school. We are still called racist, xenophobe and un-American. For all those advocating we speak Spanish, Give it up. This is America. English has been the language spoken here for centuries. If illegal aliens want to communicate let them learn English. We're paying for that, too.

No one can deny that english is one of the most difficult languages to learn. The problem isn't that they can't learn english. Most people are totally unaware of any resources available to them. Many cities have programs at extremely low costs for basic english lessons. True enough in the past and now LEGAL immigrants have always made a point of making sure their children learn how to speak the language of the country their parents now live in and themselves assimilating into society. contrary to popular belief, in the past legal immigrants did not government services the way the do now. They felt it was a sign of failure to do so. Because today's illegal aliens are more willing to put up with unfair practices many therefore no longer feel obligated to learn the language. Plus more and more cities are being dual language now those who don't know spanish are now strangers in their city. By the way, 'alien' simply means unknown foreigner, and is an accurate term. If they want to be called immigrants do so LEGALLY.

As you have mentioned already, our govt is accommodating them so they don't need to. It's not just the illegals but it's mostly the Hispanics who are always demanding things to be in Spanish. My friend who is an elementary school teacher, had to learn Spanish to keep her job in Los Angeles.

What irks me more than anything is voter registration in NYC (probably in most of the states). The form and instructions are in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, etc. I can't believe we are letting these people vote if they can't understand English! The whole voting process is very easy. Can you imagine where these non-English speakers are getting the information about the candidates and propositions? Probably in propaganda newspapers written by special interest groups who tell them how to vote.

For people to fully assimi;ate to American culture and the language it takes the second generation.

Another reason is that English classes are either too full or you have to pay about $1,000 to get in a class. It depends where the person is. If they are in a rural area then there might not be as many services for ESL as there would be in a urban setting.

Also English classes are usually fill up quite quickly, not to metnion many places were English is taught the hours are well not flexibel. Most places are open during business hours or are in some remote location were people are not able to get them.

who says they can't? I think they can but they just don't really care about learning English. They don't really need to with all the documents and signs in Spanish and "push 2 for Spanish"

The problem stems from cultural assimilation into American society or the lack-there-of. Ethnic communities exist pretty much everywhere. However, strong cultural ties to ethnic communities in places like California or Florida make it much easier to forestall that process. Assimilation does not neccesitate losing your own cultural values or language, it does involve the incorporation of other values and languages.

Making allowances for ethnic minorities by providing additional languages in such things as getting your drivers license may in the short term help new comers but in the long term can dissuade the learning process for acquiring the dominant language of the land.

By the way, there is no official language of the United States. The founding fathers were primarily rich English settlers, however, there were large ethnic minority communities that included groups such as Germans. They debated over making English and German the official languages but decided against it since various ethnic groups were immigrating. Actually, the U.S. dollar is derived from the German Tollar. Out of tradition and English influences, English became the dominant language.

It should be noted that the ethnic group which is on the rise in terms of numbers are not Hispanics, but rather Asians. Having Americans learn another language should not be dissuaded as most of the world knows at least 2 languages, if not more. What should be persuaded is for Americans learning another language of their choice.

A lot of the time, older immigrants, not just illegal immigrants, have a harder time learning a new language, as is the case in any country and language. Even the older in age one gets, learning some subjects don't come instinctively, especially not something as intuitive as one's own native language. However, their children do become bilingual and are able to speak both languages. And learning more languages is good for all people. I learned more about English grammar while learning Spanish myself. Learning anything is great for enhancement of the brain and of the human being himself or herself.

First of all most police, firemen, etc. take "command spanish". IT teaches them the words to order people around. LOL.

I think that most try to learn English (our even start programs have a 1+ year waiting list), and, i am constantly asked to help people learn basic terminology to survive here in the US.

Quite often, while they are working a full-time job, it is difficult for them to find time to take a class. Also, learning another language is not easy, and, English is so confusing..........
