Back, BACK in the day when buffets started popping up in my city, not many knew that they were supposed to tip the server. My family never bothered with it. Now, we all know better. The buffets started posting signs that encouraged people to tip.

Yes people, you are supposed to tip. A server can not directly ask for one. I know of many buffets that do not have a tip line on credit card receipts, this should change.

Some buffets have started to ask customers if they wanted cash back on the credit card purchase. Most people don't know what this 'hint" means.

What buffets should start doing is allowing people to eat first then pay, so that the customer can tip on the service received. If they want to keep the pay first system then they should encourage people to tip by using signs and adding tip lines to credit card purchases.

I never go tho buffet-meals because I think is food from the prior day. I always give 20 to 25 % tip whenever I go to a restaurant.

You can't ask. Tipping at a buffet is unusual, but one could try setting a tip jar out and see if anyone puts anything in it.

Most people don't leave tips at buffet. I will when the server offers to bring me more tea or something like that.

I would not ask for tips, though. If you want tips, you should look for a job at a regular restaurant.

don't nobody tips at a buffet

Edit
let me get this straight i get my own food and drink get up and get my dessert if i want some Who am i Tipping? The guy who cuts the roast beef? Look if the restaurant is not paying you enough to clear the tables or what ever you do there get a another job I will never tip at a buffet. If places are trying to get costumers to tip staff at a buffet its just so they don't have to pay them.

Buffet waiters should not depend upon tips. They are not truly being "waited" on in the traditional manner.

The best you can do is to do your best. Be friendly, nice and do your job well. Those who do tip at buffets will tip better when you provide good service.

There is no "best way". You don't ask for a tip, especially at a buffet. If one is given to you, great. If not, that's great too.

There is no polite way to ask for a tip. Be friendly and polite to your customers, keep their glasses filled and clear the dishes from the table in a timely manner and you will start to find tips on the table.

There really is no way to ask for a tip because it is not required and you may offend someone. Best thing to do is work hard and give your best service and you should recieve a tip.
