People litter because they are selfish, inconsiderate, brainless twits!

I'm a smoker (ashamed to say) and I NEVER throw butts on the ground as you don't have to be a non-smoker to be annoyed by this. When I go hiking, I butt it out and put it in a pocket or a sock to toss later.

I've had people claim 'it diminishes the value of the car if you use the ashtray', and sadly, there's probably some truth to that. So for some people, it's a catch 22 because non-smokers don't want to buy a used car if the ashtray shows signs of use, but they don't want to see them on the corners and such.

I had being behind someone who just tosses their butt out the window. What if someone with a leaky gas tank where to have to stop over it and the car were to catch fire? I don't know why people don't think of these things.

I've tried to ease up on getting upset over this when a friend told me birds use them for lining their nests with them.

Used to be that cigarette smokers put their butts in ashtrays, and they went out with the trash to a landfill. Way back when I was a smoker (over 30 years ago) the cigarettes weren't filtered and the butts did decompose nicely. Just goes to show you that when unthinking people come up with solutions they are bad solutions. Unfiltered cigarettes did a better job of shortening the life span, reducing the lifetime consumption resulting in less butts so it was better for the environment both ways less pollution and less residual.

Probably for the same reason people decide to correspond in ALL CAPS... ignorance.

Actually, it probably has more to do with laziness... it's much easier to flick your ashes (and cigarette butt) out the window than it is to put them in the ash tray and at some point clean not only the ashtray but the floor.

Also, when was the last time you purchased a car WITH an ashtray. The last car (actually van) I purchased doesn't... so what other option do people have?

Here in WA we have a litter reporting scheme. The Keep Australia Beautiful Council send you some addressed postcards that you keep in your car. When you see a butt flicker (or other litterer) you tick the boxes on the back of the card, along with filling out rego number, time date etc. and mail it in (no stamp reqd). They mail out the fine to the driver - no questions asked - it's brilliant.

Sigarette filters absorb water
together with the nicotine produce an effective repellent against Ants as well as conserving humidity

Do you want Ants to take over the World ????

No .
then leave the wet buts on the ground

I just throw 'em out the window. Where they go after that is up to them.

Seriously....Point taken. Every little bit helps.

I agree. As if smoking isn't a nasty enough habit. Many (I guess not all) smokers are selfish and think the world is their ashtray and not the place where everyone has to live and breathe.

That is not a question. It is just a rant on litter. And not even the most common litter either.
