My daughter is 15 months and I can't remember exactly how old she was when I bought her a baby pillow but it has been in her cot for quite a long time.
From memory there are different sizes? The one I have seems to fit the pillow cases that come with cot sheets and cot doona sets.
My little girl starts off with her head on the pillow but has always moved around her cot a lot while sleeping so she doesn't have her head on it for long lol. She sleeps side ways and upside down.
I would suggest if your son uses a pillow in your bed then he would like to use one in his own bed.
You could even tell him that now that he has his own pillow he can sleep in his own bed all night!! :-) It would be wonderful for you if this works.
My daugther also wakes nearly every night and I take her into my bed and I am looking forward to her sleeping in her own bed every night. She used to sleep through when she was younger but I think she now has a bad habit of only going back to sleep once she is in bed with me.

My son has been using a pillow since he was about 12 months old. I gave him a pillow from my bed hoping that he would sleep better. He seems to be more comfortable with it in his crib. I would say that a pillow at your sons age would be fine.

My son has had a pillow since he was 12 moths. As long as they are strong enough to push their upper body up, they are old enough to have a pillow. Some people would say not to use it until the baby is 2, but thats being overly paranoid.
What I did was get a travel pillow. They are the perfect size for a baby, and are rather firm in case you are still worried about suffocation.

my daughter is 17 months old and she sleeps on a pillow when she takes a nap in the living while being monitored. i have never allowed her to take her pillow into the crib but i think she would like it too. i'm not experienced with it but it should okay if he likes the pillow on your bed. make sure if the pillow has a pillow case that its not too big and would anyway suffocate him. good luck :)

My son moved to a toddler bed right after he turned 2. He got a pillow, but in all honesty, he never used his pillow (and preferred to sleep on the floor) until he was almost 3.5

It should be fine by now. Get a firm one.
It's mostly a risk for SIDS, but by 16-months-old, SIDS is not really an issue. The theory behind it is the same as why you don't put them on their tummy to sleep -- if they end up facedown on it and need to come up to breathe but can't because either they didn't have the instinct to move, and the ability to lift the face off the pillow, it's dangerous. A toddler, though, can do both.

My son had a small pillow around 12 months. If they're capable of sitting up, rolling themselves over, etc. a small (NOT fullsized) pillow will not be a suffocation hazard. Just don't overload the bed/crib; one pillow is enough.

I recently just moved my son from his crib to a "big boy bed" and he uses his own pillow. Maybe just give him a pillow at nap time to see if he likes it or not, and if so have him pick one out the next time you go to the store. (sometimes picking them out themselves helps too).
(I don't think he's too young...my son is 17 months)

He really doesn't need one yet, and if you did get him one chances are you would find him curled up on the other side of the crib after just a few minutes anyway. I would ere on the side of caution and leave the pillow out until he moves to a toddler bed. I would hate to be the one statistic.

I really think some of this SIDS stuff goes a little over the top...it's up to you, but I think a person should be careful. Maybe when you put him to bed for a nap give him a pillow and check on him to see how he's doing....if you're worried, perhaps move his bed into your room for a while while you use the pillow.
