God cannot be untrue to his character so, in that sense, He cannot do anything He wants.
The Christian idea is that God has created us to be His sons and daughters in a relationship/fellowship of love. The reward for accepting Him as our Father is God Himself; the punishment for rejecting Him is the absence of God.
Worship is a form of relationship building. Worship includes respect, learning and obedience, the very same things that we would like our own children to do for their parents.

God can not create square circles. God is perfect, and therefore unable to break the laws he creates. One of those laws is the gift of will to human beings. Human beings choose to do what they do, think what think, and believe what they believe. God does not punish you for not worshiping him and not even for not believing in him. But when a person does not believe in the truth, and instead chooses knowingly to believe in false things, then that person loses sight of reality and is in danger of becoming identified with non existence.
God does not want any of his children to become self identified with the cessation of reality and existence. There are two types of people, those who know God and those who do not. Of those who do not, he waits, knocking on the door to your heart through those he sends.

Why would you not want to worship the God that gave you life itself? God is our father and has ground rules for people to follow for their own good. God is God. He makes the rules. We have the CHOICE to obey or be disobiedient. It is our choice. I play by the rules. Some people don't want to do that so they are taking a gamble as to their eternal life.
