You are right it is public records and it is a FEDERAL case not a local county record that you are looking for so find the FEDERAL website for bankruptcy! Good luck if I knew the state or city I could get you the link but, I'll bet you can google as fast as I can. Good Luck!

RE Is it possible to find out if someone has filed for bankruptcy?
Just trying to find out if someone is telling the truth with regard to money owed.. If bankruptcy information is public, how do I search for that person in the public records? I would like to know if they are not listed, does this mean they are not telling the truth?

You can hire someone to find out or you can do your own research. The US Government has a system called "PACER", Public Access to Court Electronic Records. You will need to make sure you are in the correct bankruptcy court district. If they are not there then that means that they did not file bankruptcy.
They charge you $0.08 per page, but until you accrue over $10(basically 125 pages) they don't charge you. Also, if you don't go over the $10 from January 1st to December 31st they clear your account back to $0.
If the court is not on-line you would have to contact the court clerk in the FEDERAL court where they live.

Every state has at least 1 federal bankruptcy court and many states several. The will have to file in the closes court to where they live. It is a matter of public record but you will need SS numbers to find out

Is this a UK question because you are on the UK board and have many USA answers. But in the UK if a person goes bankrupt it is usually announced in the local paper. They will also have a bankruptcy number which they are supposed to issue to creditors to prove their bankruptcy. Then you can go to the official receiver and stake your interest in any monies recovered from repossession and resale of property etc. So ask your debtor for this number, she is obliged by law to supply it to you.

If you are UK, a notice has to be published in newspaper of bankruptcy so that creditors can file their claim. This will be issued by the accountants or insolvency practitioner appointed to handle the affairs. You then contact them to put yourself on creditors list. If this person has gone bankrupt though, your name should be on creditors list and you should have been officially notified of the bankruptcy.
