You should be able to use regular sugar. Read the box to make sure or google the brand. You may also be able to get a machine at a party store that sales costumes. Usually anywhere you can purchase one of those small helium gas tanks you used to blow up balloons, you can find a cotton candy machine. Good Luck.

Many party supply stores have cotton candy machines you can rent, plus they have the cotton candy sugar too.
Look in your local yellow pages for party supplies or equipment rental.
