Let's see...you're seventeen and I would guess your parents have the final say in this...

I remember when one of my sons traded a good running (but boring) Buick for a jacked up, big tire'd Chevy 4X4... but after his insurance went up mucho dollars, his gas mileage dropped in half and he blew a $300.00 tire and didn't have the $$$ to replace it he sold the truck (at a big loss) and bought a pretty mundane Chevy Cavalier.

The BMW is expensive to repair, expensive to insure (it's a perfrormance car in the eyes of the insurance company) and will not be as reliable as your Ford.

When you get out of school and you have a good job and your own $$ you can buy what you want...until then you're better off with what you've got.

I know you don't want to hear this but welcome to the real world...

Actually, a 13-14 year old BMW will NOT have less problems than a Ford Taurus LX, which is half the age. It really doesn't make sense to replace a car with an even older one with higher mileage from the standpoint of reliability and cost.

It might sound like a bargain to get a Bimmer on the cheap, but the purchase price is only part of the cost of total ownership. The BMW is going to be a lot more expensive to maintain and service. You'll pay a lot of money for parts and the technicians will likely charge more. They also aren't necessarily trouble free, either. Yes, the engine and drivetrain are pretty durable, but the electrics eventually go out and have to be replaced, and believe me, they aren't cheap - I currently own a German car (Audi) and maintain it religiously.

You are also not likely to save any money on insurance, and for a young driver, insurance is very costly.

Sorry, but I'd have to side with your parents on this one - there isn't any logical talking points to support your proposal. I'd wait until you're out of the nest, working, and paying for a car on your own dime to chase that BMW.

If it aint broke... Dont fix it.. You dont NEED a different car, You only want a different car. I agree w/ the others.

BMW.. lots of electrical problems. Maintance costs are much higher than a ford. Some parts must be special ordered from Germany. Tires on the BMW run about $250 a piece or more....

They are probably selling the BMW for $4,000 b/c they are tired of putting money into it.

BMW is not a more reliable car, and in addition requires more money for maintanance. Sorry. A Lexus might be a more convincing argument as far as reliability.

You want a cooler car and that's really the only argument on your side.

Yup, the BMW will prob cost you in the long run. THey're known for electrical problems, and plus, when you need to get parts for it, A LOT more expensive than the Ford.

If you pay for the car yourself, and pay for your own insurance, your parents would have minimal input as it would be your money.
