I got myself a male Shih Tzu. He is amazing with a five year old. Our dog, Kosmo, is three years old and we got him from the county animal shelter. He was amazingly smart, easy to train and really laid back. We'd never had a problem with him going in the house, never noticed a problem with him shedding and is the most easy going dog I've ever seen.
Shih Tzu's were the first dog to be bred specifically for human companionship and they're excellent at their job. He is VERY friendly but not in your face. He offers his ball to anyone that visits, but doesn't jump up on them unless they beckon for him to do so.
He loves strangers and his owners, and we could not ask for a single better dog. I would bet money that this kind of dog would not let you down!

You could get a miniature poodle - not toy.
I would definitely keep it away from the kids though. Any small dog is at risk of being hurt by little children.
And NO dog is going to take all the crap that kids can dish out. So to avoid any issues - I would keep your dog in a separate area during the times when the children are at your house. You could put her in an out of the way room with chew toys & maybe a radio or tv turned on. Or if you live up North & have a nice clean dry & cool basement - she could hang out there til the kids go home.

1). "Goldendoodles", "Cockapoos" and any other Doodle, Noodle, and Poo are not breeds, they are mutts, and there's plenty of Poodle mixes at the animal shelter.
2). I don't reccomend any Herding breed. They were bred to do a job, and if you don't give them a job to do, they will become destructive! They will tear up your house, they will dig. Herding breeds= Collies, Sheepdogs, Shepherds, ETC.
3). Most "small" dogs are not what you want. They're yappy, they're more territorial, and a little kid stepping on it could leave you with a $1,500 emergency vet bill.
4). All dogs shed.
5). Rescue a dog, visit petfinder.org for more info. If you REALLY want to buy-go to AKC.org for a referral to a RESPONSIBLE breeder. Don't support backyard breeders or puppymills. Don't make how much money you have to spend the biggest priority-make the quality of the dog and it's parents' your highest priority. If you can't afford a dog, don't get one.

If you can stand a medium to a Little larger, mine is 55 lbs, get an American Pit Bull Terrier. I know a killer dog, don't believe it. In the past they were the most popular family dog in the country. They are know as " The Nanny Dog" because they are so great with kids. I have seen mine lay on the floor with my baby grandson for an hour. She lets him play with her ears while she licks his toes. She is big enough to not be hurt easily.
Small dogs can be hurt and it will cause them to snap and bite.
Here is a site that may help you in making a choice.

petfinder.com is where you find a dog. If you're looking for a breeder, then you need to provide more info.
Kid-friendly dogs are dogs who have been well-socialised and well-trained. There's no such thing as a dog who doesn't require proper handling in order to be safe around adults, let alone kids.
Dogs shed. If you want a dog you'll have to get used to it, unless you opt for a hairless variety...

The dogs mentioned are large and shed profusely.
Your description fits the Rat Terrier perfectly. They are an awesome little dog. The sizes vary from Toy, Mini, and Standard. Toys range from 2-3 pounds, to the Standard at 18" and around 35 pounds of pure muscle. They are playful, loyal, very smart, alert, friendly and outgoing, no inherited diseases, very short haired with little shedding, sturdy (even the toys), learn to do tricks, easily obedience trained, great watch dogs. Other facts: they are instinctual hunters and will kill rabbits, rodents (you won't need a cat), squirrels, gophers, chinchillas, etc. For this reason, you can't have them around any pets of the this nature. Cats are okay with these dogs. They get along great with them.
They are registrable with the World Wide Kennel Club, Soon, the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, just to name a few. Here's some websites that give info on this most wonderful breed: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ratterrier.htm

AND there's more good news......There's also a hairless variety. Registered as American Hairless Terriers. Of course, they don't have any hair at all. You have to keep clothes on them all year around to protect their skin. In the summer, if they are naked, you have to use sunscreen. People with allergies can tolerate these little beauties. They are Rat Terriers that are hairless. They are now a breed of their own (AHT). They also come in a coated variety. Here's a website on them.

Here's a breeder's website with lots of cute photos: http://www.kyahts.com/
I can guarantee that you will never regret owning one of these little dogs. They are one of the most awesome breeds out there and are becoming more and more popular as people discover just what owning a Rat Terrier means. Keep me posted if you decide to get one of these little beauties. You won't regret it!
Take care and good luck. Let me know if I can be of further help to you.

My Bichon frise loves kids. He doesn't shed at all (but does need to be clipped every 6 weeks). The grooming only takes about 5 minutes if you do it every day. They are not as delicate as mini poodles, but you do still need to be careful when they are puppies. They are easily stepped on and could be injured by over boisterous children.

Labs are good...
Some small dogs arent good because
they can get hurt by the children, they also get annoyed.
Some big dogs can be dangerous around kids...
So a medium sized dog would be great

Go to your local rescue and get an adult dog.... chances are the dog is already potty trained and anything medical that would be wrong with the dog should already have been addressed.

Cockapoos are great dogs! And they don't shed at all. We have one and we love it. Our son comes up and whacks the dog in the face and the dog just puts up with it.
