I suffered from depression about five years ago, but I realized it had a lot to do with the choices I was making and once I started doing more positive things, I found I felt better about myself and my depression subsided...

Helly-Don't get so defensive. Of course, it's not your fault. I was sexually abused by a family member when I was younger, too. What i'm saying I guess is that many times people don't look at what they're doing to create their inner Hell. Of course, there are situations where things happen to them that's just out of their control, or it's genetic. I think that, far too often, people just say "i'm depressed" when they can make changes in their lives that will curb that depression.

Well there is probably a more in depth psychological reasoning for it, but I am not a psychologist so I can't answer it that way.
Anyways I think that in a sense it is quite self-inflicted simply because I believe that we all control our own emotions and mental state(s). I also believe that it depends on the individual's personality type, and how they respond to situations and how they let themselves respond as well.
*I do agree with you though, that by putting out positive thoughts into the world, you will recieve positive feedback in return and vise versa.*
.I have come to the realization of the same thing myself, for example not too long ago I was being negative about everyone and everything all because I had a bad day or something or someone ticked me off, then I was just bummed out and 'depressed' about life etc. and the feedback? Well let's just say...it's wasn't positive, it's like even when you're not obvious about being irritated or upset about things, people just know...and they give you the same attitude in return.
Then one day I started to just tell myself that no matter what "be positive" and "don't sweat the small stuff" so when/if someone would cut me off while I was driving, I learned to not get mad over it and not let that jerk ruin my day over something silly.
*I do have to say the results were nothing short of amazing and it seemed like everything started to look up from that point on. I felt so much better when I wasn't upset, or rather letting myself become upset over something so stupid. I also realized that I did inflict that "depression" like emotion on myself among the "anger" emotion and what not.
Anyways sorry for rambling, I guess my own moral is that...I do believe that depression and any other deep emotions can be self inflicted. It's all a matter of how people "take" things and deal with them and their own emotions in regards to a situation.
.We don't have to feel a certain way, we choose to feel that way...because we psych ourselves out and make ourselves believe a situation is worse than it really is half the time. No one can make anyone feel a certain way either, we choose to believe what others say about us that is negative...if everyone would learn to think for themselves and see what a great person they are...we might have some happier people around here. :):)

i think that depression can be caused by our situations.
and CONTRARY to popular opionion, clinical depression or depression which is a symptom of an illness is chemically caused by our bodies/brains and CAN NOT BE CONTROLLED by waving some magic wand!
people have no idea depression is considered an illness.. just like cancer, and many times it must be treated with drugs and therapy in order to be managed or controlled at all.
saying that, yes! when we find the motivation to work on our lives, things can change for the better, and particularly for those who suffer "situational" depression.
i'm very sorry to hear you were abused as a child.. i hope you're coping? hugs take care

Yes and no, not so harshly. People do have the choice to stop being depressed. Of course, many people do not have the tools to implement that choice in their lives, this is where medication, therapy and community support come into play. One cannot blame a person for depression, but one cannot deny personal responsibility for thoughts and emotions.

Sometimes people can fake it just for the image such as Goths and emo's. Real depression can be caused by stuff that has happened such as bereavement, loss of a job, loneliness. Even so depression can be caused merely by lack of sunlight, hunger, tiredness, chemical imbalance in the brain.

Generally the answer is "yes". However, very often we fall into situations where it is difficult not to have depression if you don't know how to deal with it. It's like swimming out of the sea without knowing how to swim. Do you know what I mean?
Depression is a psychological disorder, i.e. it is a spiritual sickness, where you need to know what causes it in order to fight it. You can find a lot of information on how to struggle with spiritual illnesses in the writings of the Holy Fathers.

individually yeah i could agree. while i grew to become into in severe college i grew to become into incredibly lots depressed all of the time. i presumed existence purely sucked and it grew to become into because of the fact of stupid little issues like undesirable relationships. ultimately i found out how stupid and infantile i grew to become into appearing and lightened up. looking lower back i wasted a great sort of time for no reason. i don't possibly consider the chemical imbalance ingredient. the way i see it, you in basic terms have one existence to stay, could as properly make it properly worth residing. And that dude isn't depressed he's f*cking PSYCHO!!!
