You have to decide. It's your body not ours and anyone who honestly suggests something for your body isn't thinking about the fact that you have to live with it. Search the internet and books and tattoo parlors to see what signs you like, have meaning to you, and take your time. If you aren't sure about what to get, don't get one. Wait until you know for sure and be confirmed in your choice. You don't need to be Chinese or Japanese or Russian or whatever ethnic group the symbol comes from, as long as you know that's what it is and it's what you want go for it! I have a Kanji and love it.

When I read your question the first thing that popped into my head was BRITANNY SPEARS....what an idiot....She got a chinese symbol and it doesn't even mean what she thought it meant. So do your homework and don't think the guy at the tattoo shop will know either. He just wants to make a buck. Remember this is going to be there for the rest of your life, so choose a spot that could be hid if you end up marrying the president of the US. You never know????

I have 6 symbols on my arm in a circle try are: energy, dreams, confidence, dedication, devotion, and heart. I got them to remind me everyday the kind of person I want to be. Each is a pretty good looking symbol too. I guess it just depends on what type of person you are. I got it in chinese symbols because its something I did to remind me not show what it is off to other people. Hope that idea helps you decide.

Don't get something so cliche. And I agree with all of the others that advise you against getting a tattoo that you can't read yourself. I have my daughter's name (Haruko) in Kanji on my ankle, but that has a deep, significant, and personal meaning to me. And I did my own homework to find the right symbol for my artist to copy- and not on line. Wait until you have something important to indelibly ink onto your body. I'm sure Britney Spears wishes she had.

All the Asians I know (and I'm married to a Japanese guy) think it's dumb to have Chinese symbols on your body if you don't understand the language. I have "joy" in Kanji but I understand Japanese language and Kanji.
Get something else.

I think your animal would be a good one, like I am the year of the monkey so my symbol would be http://z.about.com/d/chineseculture/1/0/A/W/monkey.gif
Here is a website where you can see what your symbol would be, and also about what it means... http://chineseculture.about.com/library/extra/character/bls_canimalsign.htm

The most common one (of your choices) is love (pronounced: "Ai"; another alternate pronounciation is "Ren" which looks like this [1=]). Another common one is friendship (pronounced: "Gebo"; which believe it or not is also a runic symbol that looks like this [X]).
