Satan's initial problem was pride. He kinda tempted himself. As a matter of fact, pride is the first step to almost EVERY sin.

"But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire" -James 1:14

Satan wanted the worship that God was receiving for himself. That desire led Satan to become selfish and begin to try to steal that worship. This led Satan to becoming a worker against God. Jesus says concerning Satan; "he did not stand fast in the truth" (John 8:44). That would indicate that at one time Satan was an obedient angel. He just did not stand fast in his obedience to God. Notice how the book of Ezekiel explains Satan's fall:

"You are the anointed cherub that is covering, and I have set you. On the holy mountain of God you proved to be. In the midst of fiery stones you walked about. You were faultless in your ways from the day of your being created until unrighteousness was found in you. Your heart became haughty because of your beauty. You brought your wisdom to ruin on account of your beaming splendor. Onto the earth I will throw you. Before kings I will set you, [for them] to look upon you." -Ezekiel 28:14, 15, 17

It was not God who created Satan the way he is. "When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. " (James 1:13) God gives all creation the gift of free will, the ability to chose for themselves whether or not they will remain loyal to God (Deuteronomy 30:19). Satan used his free will to pursue selfish interests.

God created him knowing exactly what he would do, and that if he had made him differently he would have been nice.
