I applied for a job with a Police Dept in Arizona. However I failed the Polygraph section. In an attempt to be completly honest I admitted to experimenting with a narcotic once in 2004. AZPOST rules no hard drug use within 7 years. So now if I re-apply in 2011, what are my chances of being hired since I have nothing to hide?

I didn't try drugs to increase my chances of being hired, it was a mistake I comitted that is keeping me from being hired. I am wondering when the time limit is over and I admit my mistake if I will have the opportunity to hired in the future?

I have no experience with this sort of thing but my best suggestion to you would be what I would personally do.....

Call your local police academy and without giving your name ask someone of authority your question. They can give you a straight answer straight from the horses mouth rather than relying on strangers here can give you.

Yahoo Answers is a great place to ask questions and get well intentioned, helpful answers but, when you have a serious question ( health career drug use etc.) ask a professional in the field of inquiry for an accurate reliable answer.

Different police departments have different policies and standards pertaining to applicants and past drug use. For example, some departments won't hire you if you've used marijuana more than a certain number of times (20 or 25 for example) regardless of how long it has been since you've last used it. Some departments would still consider you even if you've used marijuana many times as long as it has been at least a certain number of years (3 or 5 for example) since you've last used it. Your chances of getting hired could depend on things such as what department(s) you apply with, when you apply, how well you do on written tests and during interviews, and how good a candidate you are otherwise.

Depends on the drug and the frequency that you used them and the last time you used them.

Most cops over the age of 40 have used at least 1 illegal drug in their lifetime. Marijuana is the most common. For the most part, if you have used it less than 10 times in your lifetime, never sold or distributed it, and have not had illegal drugs in the past 5 years, and are honest about it, you should be OK. If they banned all drug use in your life, there would be a serious shortage of police officers (even worse that it is now)

Most departments will ban you for life for use of PCP, Meth, heroine and other harsher drugs.

I applaud you for serving in Iraq and for wanting to become a police officer. I also admire you for your honesty.

Do not be discouraged, there are other departments that will look at your military record and honesty above what you did in your youth. We are human and as young people make stupid choices and try things we would never try in our adult years.
Like the non-retired officer said ... very few out there have the ability to honestly say they have never tried any sort of drug.

I would think that there is an admissions counselor who could advise you.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, your honesty is much more important than the fact that you tried drugs once. it's the lying about it that would be a problem.
Your past matters, but think about it: how many people...in the world can say they never tried drugs...very few. They're more interested in why/when/surrounding circumstances, and how honest and upfront you are.
Good luck!

Experimentation with drugs is not part of the requirements for becoming a Police Officer.

Edit. Contact the agency direct. They would be the only ones that would be able to give a correct answer.

Come to New York City and live here for six months. That's all you really need to do to become a cop.
