Since my archives are not overloaded with the tools and rituals as used by every day people, every day--as opposed to commercial Authors' scrying directions-- I will probably add some of the answers to the Archives unless I'm ask to not do so.

Stones. All forms of Quartz. I study them before purchasing, for "plains" that reflect the light. It is actually water trapped in the atomic structure of the stone.
Moonstone, Sunstone, Perdot...any that carry these "flaw" plains in them, large & multiple ones is what I look for. Most of these can be inexpensive if you shop around. A gem & mineral show is always a good place to go! ; )
As far as preparation goes, put as much or little into it as you wish to get out of it. Sometimes I do it in a crowded room just to escape. Other times, I will remove myself from everyone, find a quite spot with good energy, sit, ground, center, balance and focus intensely.

Wow, now you got me thinking...it would only seem logical that the most effective form for an individual would be relative to that persons element. I am an Earth baby, so naturally I connect with the energies of Earth...stones. I would bet that Squirt, is an Air sign. ; )

For divination my favorite tool would be the elder Futhark (runes) and to ready myself I will often do a silent meditation for a moment, while focusing upon Yggdrasil (world tree). This is my most common form of divination, for general scrying I tend to prefer to use pyromancy when I go camping, and I usually just find myself staring at the campfire.

I used to use this one necklace for scrying, but that's long gone. Now I just use the ring I wear the most.

And I don't do anything to prepare, except take the ring off. I was taught how to do mainly without tools and self focus. It's saved me tons of cash and time.

My self, don't need tools.
Direct communication is the only tool. YOU!

I don't use tools any more. I close my eyes and go where I want to see. Much faster.
