No, you dont need a US passport to travel within the United States. You just need a drivers license or some photo ID. People only need it when they are traveling outside of the country.

If you are a US Citizen, you do not need a passport within the country. However, it is always a helpful document to have.
The rules are in the process of changing but I believe as of this year - 2007 - you do need a passport to go to any other country (the rules used to be relaxed for Canada, I believe).

Once you are in the US you just need a government issued photo id to board a plane but you should carry some proof of your residency status with you if you are not a citizen.
