The s70 came about in 1998, its basically a 850 with a new body style, extremely reliable and well built car, I like the glt model its a good all around package, I have nothing bad to say about this car. Now we move on to the s80 wich came in 1999 and it is had alot of problems, including transmissions that are built by general motors that are garbage, they all will fail and its very expensive to fix, the 6 cylinder twin turbo leaks oil like crazy, all kinds of electrical issues because they were the first ones in the world to do what is called a bumper to bumper networked car, And it took some time for them to get it right, I would never buy an s80 with a 6 cylinder turbo engine, the nonturbos are more reliable. From 2004 on the s80 is a pretty good car, but it has got since a bad rep the dealers cant give em away, lol. Go with any year s70 and i think you will be happy, the s60 has been a great car, you may want to look into that car. The above post that said 960s were garbage is totally wrong, 960s are good cars, may have just had some bad luck.

The S70 was introduced in 1998 as a replacement to the 850 model. The S80 was introduced in 1999. It replaced the S90 which had been the 960 in 1997.

The S80 is a more luxury model.

The S70 would be considerably cheaper. I would purchase either one as I currently drive a 1992 240 and a 1997 850 Wagon. I really like Volvos!

The first S80s were notoriously unreliable. They had all sorts of transmission and electrical problems, including a radio antenna so poorly designed that it would not receive AM stations. The S70s were substantially more reliable.
Having said all that, I think Volvo reliability began to take a serious downturn with the introduction of the 960. I have owned eleven Volvos since 1968 and would not hesitate to buy any Volvo 940 or earlier model. The only late model Volvo I had was a '98 S90 that I bought new and it turned out to be the worst car I ever had.

The S70 was introduced in 1998 and the S80 in 1999. Reliability will depend on the drive train comnbination and level of maintenance the car has received, but Consumer Reports appears to give them decent reliability ratings.

hi, you will locate that almost no areas from an S70 will extra healthy a S80, the S70 is surely a facelift 850, a very diverse automobile. in my opinion i'd say you're mad to be paying for a 2001 S80, I promise you it is going to breakdown alot, could have electric powered faults and could drink gas like its going out of style. If others dont accept as true with me then say so yet you're making a extensive mistake. carry on with pre 1999 Volvos and all would be nicely.
