Throwing a basketball in the street to slow down speeders is not only illegal it may also earn you a black eye. You should be aware that if you caused an accident by (Knowingly and Purposely) rolling the ball into the street you would probably be held legally responsible for any injuries or damages your actions caused. If speeders are a concern take the plate # down or a description of the vehicle and report it to the police.

yes, i do think it's illegal to roll basketballs into the street to stop speeders. Besides, people are going to figure out (if they haven't already) what you are doing and you are going to find yourself in some very heated confrontation(s) with those pissed-off people. Being that a lot of people carry guns (or other weapons) on themselves or in their cars these days, i would think really hard about what you're doing. The best things would be to have your city post a sign(s) along your street and also to create a speed bump near or in front of your home so people will be FORCED to slow down to prevent damage to their cars. By the way, just how many basketballs do you have?! And don't you care that they might get flattened by the cars? that's a waste of good basketballs. good luck.

Yes, because -- believe it or not -- it may count as assault.

The assault laws started being an attack against a person. Then that got extended to being an attack against anything the person was holding or wearing -- and somehow that was stretched (in many jurisdictions, not everywhere) to include cars.

The example most often given is if you are sitting in a car, and someone walks up and smashes a windshield. That counts as an assault on the person in the car. But that often gets extended to include any object thrown at a car while a person is inside.

There may also be other crimes that come into play -- like interference with motorists, reckless endangerment with conduct likely to cause an accident, etc.

It is "illegal" in the following ways:
(1) It is civilly negligent behavior. If a car swerves to avoid those basketballs, you will have to pay for any damage that results.
(2) Some jurisdictions have criminal negligence laws, which means that you could be arrested and put in jail if an accident results.
(3) It is disorderly conduct.

If you cause an accident and it is proved that you did it on purpose, you can be financially liable for the accident. You should report the speeding to your police department and give them a license plate number. In most cases they will follow up on the complaint. Besides, That's a good way to ruin a basketball.

yes, definitely, you are obstructing traffic. How about standing there along side the road, all cute and stuff, and hold a placard that kindly asks them to slow down. If you are really cute, they will slow down for just a look. Now that's not illegal.

Probably, I would recommend petitioning your city hall to put in a speed bump. Or just call CHP and tell 'em you've got a whole bunch of tickets to write.

Yes it is. You should call the police department to have them set up a speed trap.

Probably not, but maybe. Anyways if you really want to slow them down, think heavier. Bowling balls.
