I had my tooth pulled this morning because my jaw has been aching all weekend. I called the dentist this morning and was lucky to receive an appointment for today.
My boss was very mad at me for calling in because another employee called in today.
So when I got home I called her to let her know what was going on and she said she had had a tooth pulled and its no big deal and I should try to come in anyway.
Thing is I had another problem. The dentist tried to pull a second tooth and failed because I wasnot able to be numbed enough and it hurt. Now I have the second tooth half pulled out and it hurts terribly!
I took the pain medicine (Rx) and I feel like I will be out of it at work.
I agreed anyway to go in for the afternoon and now my family is angry with me.
My husband says I should have stood up to her and said "no I would not come in at all today".
He says I shouldn't have called her and given her the chance to talk me into coming in.
What did I do wrong?

I work with children. That's the worst part. I am also a friend with my boss and I wonder if that might have left her open to treat me this way.
I feel like quitting. She has really upset me.
But this is on me. I think I should have been more firm.

I don't think that you did anything wrong. If you are in pain, there is nothing that you can do about it. I would call her and say look I am sorry I cannot come in. If I come in with this toothache I could risk getting an infection.

In retrospect you should have called your supervisor this morning to say, "I have a dental emergency, and have an appointment to see my dentist. I will not be in today."

Since you called afterward, I would have said that' "I am on pain medication and it is not safe for me to work today."

You shouldn't feel bad, you should be off if you're in that much pain. She'll just have to make do without you. You should not go in tomorrow either.

I would've called her, too. I don't think it was wrong at all for you to do so. But I do agree that if you don't feel like being at work, you should've told her no.

You should have told her you are on pain medicine and not able to drive.

She took advantage of you.
