Yes, I would think it is tacky, especially since you don't know if you are talking to the head HR person, a clerk in the HR office, or the person who will actually interview you.
Dress for your new bosses job, not for the one you are interviewing for.

Not tacky but shows lack of imagination. If it is a professional interview, always wear a suit or sports jacket & tie.

I wouldn't ask the person - it depends what the interview is for - if it is a senior position then it should be suit with tie but if it is anything else then trousers, shirt and tie and maybe just a casual jacket if one was needed

You should go to the interview, regardless of the kind of job or the dress code at that job, dressed professionally. Wear your suit and tie, and don't ask what to wear.

If you're a teen applying for jobs like McDonalds, you could ask. If you are applying for professional positions, just wear the suit and tie.

I don't think it is professional to ask what to wear from a potential employer, however a nice pressed button down and tie is always acceptable.

You might want to try asking a relative what to wear to a interview

Don't ask, not because it's tacky, but because you'll sound like you're more concerned with how you're dressed than showing what a good employee you'll be. Always dress slightly better than you think you'll need to be.
