its the fuel injectors. just place your finger on the injector and see if the sound is in sync with the tap you feel in your finger.
the 4.7 doesn't have EGR
the 4.7 does not have rocker arms its an over head cam design
also the 4.7 is known to bleed out the oil in the lifters over night and when you start it up you will get a tapping sound as the lifters starts to get oil pumped back in to them .
one last thing the 1500 ram does not come with the cummins on the 2500 and on up is the engine available

4.7L's are notorious for exhaust manifold bolts breaking and allowing exhaust noises. Is it mostly cold but goes away some when warm? If so, the rear most studs are the most common for breaking.
Most can be replaced without removing the manifold or replacing the gasket (as long as it isn't blown out). Small vice grips usually grab the broken stud enough to work it out. Of course, if it broke off closer to the head, the manifold must come off, not all that difficult.
If it is your timing chain, have it replaced right away. You didn't say how many miles on it, and even though we haven't had a lot of chain troubles, if high miles it might be that. It has hydraulic tensioners on the cam chains and a mechanical tensioner on the primary chain. The cam chains ride on guides. The 4.7 is also an interference engine.
I'd still check the exhaust manifolds first. If you have the heat shields over them, with the engine cold reach through the wheel well and tug on the rear of the shield, both top and bottom. If it moves, the stud is broken.
Good luck.

If it's just ticking, that varies with the engine rpm, but never gets very loud, then it is probably just a little excess slack in the rocker arms. This happens a lot with Dodges. It's annoying, but not especially harmful. A timing chain knocking against the cover would be much louder than that. Try to see if you can tell what part of the engine it's coming from. A cheap stethoscope can help with that.

You have changed the oil recently and you're not low on oil, right?
4.7 is an odd size engine, I've always heard of dodge trucks having the 318 (5.3) and the 360 (5.9) for gasolines, you sure it's not the Cummins diesel?
Could be an egr issue, my '95 2500 sounds like a diesel when the exhaust temps get too high because of it, but my engine check light is on and pulling the codes reveals this.
If this is the case it's a royal pita to fix, the egr module is way back there under and behind the air filter housing, you can't hardly reach up under there nevermind see, I tolerate the noise and watch the exhaust temps (easy on the throttle).

Yeah, feels like lifters would be sticking upon initiate-up. The noise frequently is going away after some seconds tho... i'd try an oil additive to quiet the lifters down. in case your engine has extreme miles it incredibly is incredibly useful to attempt a thicker oil.

Don't know much about that engine so my only thought is that if it hasn't had regular oil changes the lifters get plugged with slug and it will make that noise. My Caddy sounded like it was going to blow up and then I changed the oil and the noise went away.

Try finding your EVAP canister when the solenoid purges it can make a ticking noise. If its the canister making the noise and you can actually put your hand on it and feel the purge timing match the noise.
Own a 99 Grand Cherokee LTD and 01 Durango both with 4.7's.
These motors are pretty strong.
