I went to blockbuster yesterday afternoon with my husband, my 17 year old daughter and my 8 month old daughter. As I walked in I looked at the girl behind the counter and smiled at her. She didn't smile back, say hello, how are you, can I help you, or even screw you. It didnt bother me and I went through the store and we chose our selections. We then went up to the counter to pay for the movies we chose and my baby daughter started fussing...I looked down at her in her car seat and said that we were about finished. The girl behind the counter asked me if she was my grand daughter? I kinda went white and mumbled that she was my daughter. The girl didn't skip a beat and went on about her business, she didn't even seem embarrassed. She just had this stupid grin on her face as if she did this to embarrass me. Why do some people assume that 41 is too old to have children? I have been told that I look at least 10 years younger. I wanted to smack that grin right off her face!

Thanks to all that answered...almost everyone had an intelligent answer. I was basing my assumption that she did this on purpose...being that she ignored my inital entrance into the store but said hello to everyone that came in after we did. LOL....I am not really bothered that much by her behavior....not to be mean...but she was used as the Ugly stick if you know what I mean. So I guess it was out of jealousy.

when i go out with my 17 year old and my 11 month old, some people think she is his, some think she is ours, i am 39, i just laugh it off, don't let it get to you, i usually have a come back, you should have put her on the spot, like i don't look that old do i, or maybe she thought it was your daughters child, meaning nothing about you, just that your daughter could have a child, which today is sadly very common, i know how you feel, but she didn't mean anything by it, she was young right? she just did not know any better

I think Ashley P has a good point about lots of teens having babies. Unfortunately, this is becoming normal in our society. 41 is not too old to have a child by any means. There are lots of women in their 40s that have healthy babies everyday.

I think the only thing you could have done is said something like "Wow, nice manners honey!" This would have let her known she was out of line and very, very rude.

I am sorry you had to hear that from some kid!

She was just a stupid brat.. or maybe she was happy that it wasn't your 17 year olds daughter. I wonder when there is such a difference between ages because there is so often that 15-16 year olds have kids anymore which is really sad.

I wouldn't worry about it. Next time though you should call her out on it. 41 is not to old to have kids. 60 is too old!!!

Enjoy your baby and God Bless!

The same reason people think that a 20 year old is too young to have a baby, Everybody has an opinion and you should not let that get to you they are just closed minded people who obviously don't have a life besides probably just judging everybody who walks into that store.

I think you are overreacting to the situation a little bit. If you "went white" when having to clear up who the parent was then obviously you must have felt a little defensive/embarrassed about the situation. Could that have colored your interpretation of her stupid grin? Maybe she was embarrassed but was better at covering it up and just wanted to finish the transaction rather than draw further attention to her faux pas. Heck a couple of teenage pregnancies in a row and you could be a grandmother at 31, too.

She probably thought the baby was your 17 year old daughters baby. I have a twin brother and when our mom had our little sister who is 15 years younger everyone thought she was our daughter. She was just getting into your business. Just blow it off.

Some teeny boppers are rude. My husband is 15 years older than me and people ask all the time if he is my dad. It is annoying and then if one person knows he is 15 years older than me when we get around other people that person busts out and tells everyone ( did you know he is 15 years older than her). I'm not embarssed about the age difference it's just they look at him like so pervert.

It's going to happen considering a lot of teens have babies. She thought it was your daughters. Really though she never should have asked - whether it was your grand daughter or not. Thats just one thing you dont ask - its like asking if a woman is pregnant (then it turns out she is just fat). I dont think she did it on purpose.

Maybe she was trying to play off her own embarrassment. It's nothing worth thinking about for more than 5 seconds.
