Chances are if its coming on down hill then the oil is not enough! Its falling towards the front of the tank!! Check it on level ground.

Hi are you sure you have 40W/80 oil in your Passat because if you are drain it out now! Volkswagen oil standard for your car is 503 00 though you can still use oils conforming to VW standard 500 00, 501 01 or 502 00. Volkswagen standard 503 00 is a 0W/30 oil. A viscosity of 80 is the same as Lard. I would suggest if you are using oil 40W/80 as you go down hill the oil pump is struggling to pump this oil around the engine.
The viscosity of motor oil is specified using two numbers. The first number is the viscosity when the oil is cold. This is followed by the letter W ,which stands for winter, the second number that indicates the viscosity when the oil is at operating temperature. The higher the number the thicker the oil.
The following manufactures make oil suitable for your car:
Castrol SLX LongLife II 0W-30
Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30
Esso Ultron (Long Drain) 0W-30
Havoline Synthetic 0W-30
Mobil SHC Formula V 0W-30

80 is quite thick. You may have too much oil in it?! Ive never used an 80 oil in any car in my career so change it for some 10w or 15w/40.Turbo cars tend to run thinner oil. If it still flickers on then change your switch! Good luck!

We use synthetic oil in our turbo'd engines but depending on how hard u drive it u could use a good 15/40 oil.

But with all the info it does sound like the switch
