DVD manufacturers came up with two comepeting standards. Both are used to record video, however, some burners with only burn one of the formats, some will only burn the other, some will burn both. Similarly, some with play only one or the other of the two formats, and some will play. It's a big compatibility hassle.
Your best bet is to look at the manual for your burner/player, and see what formats it supports. then buy discs of that format.
As the previous person said, both + and - R discs are only recordable once. If you want to rewrite your discs with different data, you should buy eitehr + or - RW, with can be modified. The difference between + and - RW is the same as the difference between +/-R. If you are considering buying a burner/recorder, i would highly recommend getting a DVD +/- R/RW dual format one, as it saves a lot of hassle since it will burn and play any type of disc.

WRONG
Both are write ONCE
DVD-RW is rewritable.
DVD-R are more compatible in DVD players - some players won't play DVD+R.
It has been said that DVD+R are more error free - don't know about that.
otherwise they are the same use wise.

DVD+R means that this is a rewritable DVD , you can Write something on it .. then erase it and write again ... The DVD-R means that this is a nonrewritable DVD - its simple ... you have just one write option
