Lately I've been doing some research on the Navy. I'm 30 years old with a Associates in Liberal Arts and a BA in Music.
However, I'm not interested in music as a full-time occupation(it's not what I want anymore). I'm looking for some new challenges, skills and experience in my life. It's really hard to get some straight answers since I feel like people in the Navy or recruiters will try to convince me so they can get a bonus or something of the sort. I'm very serious about a complete lifestyle change and I've never been more certain with anything. I'm a very creative person, on the other hand, I am quite disciplined and like structure and feel I need more in my life.
I'm apprehensive only because I'm afraid my Music degree and age won't allow me to become an officer.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

you are too old for Unrestricted Line.. BUT your Degree 'might' be useful for Information Warfare as an Officer. Lots of Math-like discipline in Music. It will depend on your GPA, and what else you bring to the table.
your degree will get you E3 upon enlisting, and your ASVAB Line scores determine what ratings you are eligible for.
Just keep in mind that the Navy uses TWO different recruiters.. one for enlisted, and one for Officer. so talk to BOTH.

All military officers have to have a bachelor's degree, so you do meet that requirement.
However, I do not know if your age may prevent you form entering the Navy as an officer.
You can enlist in Navy, then apply for officer programs for enlisted members. Your eligibility would depend on your field of work (known in the Navy as a rating).
I originally enlisted in Navy right out of high school, earned my BS after my enlistment, and am currently in the Naval Reserve. I am now too old to apply for officer programs, but I
like being an enlisted NCO.
If you reconsider a musical field, you can enlist in the Navy band program. As far as I know, all members of the Navy bands have a music degree, but you will not become an officer.

You should do well wherever you end up. You are much more mature than the average recruit, so you should handle your basic course really well. As a collge graduate, you should look into an Officer Candidate School. Unless you just want to enlist. Your four years of college should make you an E-3 going into basic training. Push your recruiter to give you what you want. I know this is repetetive of an earlier answer I gave, but YOU are in charge, not the recruiter. As you said in your question, they're really just interested in another body.
Look at all your options before you settle into one branch or another.
Good luck to you.

Normally you can not be older then 28 I think to become an officer however you can get a waiver. I don't know about your degree is shouldn't stop you. Try contacted a recruiter. Even if they aren't so....lets say truthful in some cases you could get the basic need to know info. Try going to military.com and see if there is any info.Research, research, research. Try to find out as much as you can. If you really want it go for it. Ok I just checked, go to military.com and click on join the military and you can find info on becoming and officer and what jobs they have, about getting or having degrees. Good Luck

Your degree should not prohibit you from becoming an officer. If the Navy doesnt want to play well, then turn to another branch. AF is a good choice. All branches will train you in a career field. Good luck and you wont be disappointed. Just be firm in what you want to do and dont take "no" for an answer.
