When you die you are asleep in the grave until Jesus returns and takes you to Heaven. You don't go to Heaven or Hell when you die.
"And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY."
John 6:40
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.
John 6:44
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.
John 6:54
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the LAST DAY.
John 11:23-24
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the LAST DAY.
John 12:48
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment
Hebrews 9:27
The order: death – resurrection - judgment
In order to understand death we have to let the Bible speak for itself which is why In the following answer there is a text to back every statement
I was listening to a sermon recently in which the pastor talked about this subject. Talking about death we should look at how life was created
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. - Genesis 2:7
The verse does not say God GAVE him a soul it says man BECAME a soul. From this we see that the soul is the combination of both the breath of God and the physical body.
So what happens when you die?
1) In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.- Genesis 3:19
2) And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. - Luke 23:46
3) Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. - Ecclesiastes 12:5
From these scriptures we see that when you die the two components of the soul either decay (the physical body) or goes back to God (the spirit)
Many people believe that the spirit is some intangible ghostlike substance but if you look at what the bible says
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils - Job 27:3
From this we see that the spirit is the Breath of Life not a … ghost (for lack of a better word)
Do the dead go directly to heaven or hell?
Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the Lord.
Psalms 6:5 In death there is no remembrance of thee.
Isaiah 38:18 Death can not celebrate thee.
Psalms 146:4 His thoughts perish.
Job 21:32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die; but the dead do not know anything, nor do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten.
From these verses we see that there is no thought in death
Some may argue that these are all Old Testament examples of the teaching of death so let’s look at the New Testament
Jesus speaking about the death of Lazarus
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus SLEEPETH; but I go, that I may awake him out of SLEEP. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. John 11:11-14
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which SLEPT arose
1 Thessalonians 4:15 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are ASLEEP, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 Them also which SLEEP in Jesus will God bring with him.
If we look at what Jesus said on the cross in Luke 23:43
And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
Many use this to prove the point that we go directly to our reward. The problem is in the Greek there was not a comma, the comma was placed centuries later by people who believed that we go directly to our reward. If you move the comma it conforms to the rest of scripture
And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you today, you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Read what happens on Sunday morning and Jesus tells Mary he did not ascend to heaven yet.
But doesn’t the Bible say to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord?
As I mentioned above the Bible says we do not go directly to heaven or hell. I think we should look at 2 Corinthians 5, but rather than only looking at verse 8 lets look at the whole chapter in order to gain better perspective. If you read the whole text we see Paul talking about three states of being. In chapter 1 Paul writes 1) our earthly house {our earthly bodies} 2) a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens {glorified bodies}. In verse 3 he says 3) naked.
The question to ask is when do we get our glorified bodies?
1 Corinthians 15:51 says we get them at the last trumps when Christ returns proving we do not go directly to heaven upon death.
If we go directly to heaven or Hell when we die then there is never a time when we are “naked” (not existing on earth or in Heaven)
Let’s look at what Peter said in Acts chapter 2
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Acts 2:29
For David is not ascended into the heavens
Acts 2:34
But what about Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration.
The Bible tells us how they got to Heaven, Moses was resurected according to Jude 9
And Elijah was taken to heaven in a fiery chariot 2 Kings 2:11
If you read the Bible you see that when you die you sleep in the grave until Jesus returns

To begin with look up the Hebrew word "Nephesh". Or if you like you can trust the following definition but I would prefer that you take the time to look it up so there will be no doubt. Nephesh is what the animals were called in the original text of the Hebrew scriptures. Nephesh is also what man was called when he was created. The meaning of Nephesh is soul. You are a living soul right now. When refering to the animals, most bibles translate nephesh as creatures. When refering to humans most bibles translate nephesh as soul. This was done to support the false teachibg of a soul that leaves the body at death and continues on. But I assure you that if you get yourself a copy of the Hebrew,Greek,English Translation you will learn that when the original text was written the word nephesh was used when referring to both animal and human creation. Now to answer your question as to where the soul goes after death. There are many verse's in the bible that clearly answer your question. First off, death is the opposite of life. Second, please read the following bible verse's for an answer to your question. Ecc.9:5-6, Psalm146:4,and Genisis3:19. The real hope for mankind lies in the resurrection. Of course if man had a soul that lived on after death there would be no need for a ressurection. So hopefully this has answered your question. Oh and one more thing, before anyone says to you "well what about lazarus and the rich man", I must tell you that story was a parable used to illustrate the condition of the pharisees mental attitude.

i am glad u asked about our soul, not about our body. Well, it is the belief of every Christian that at the second coming of Jesus Christ, namely, the Judgement Day, we will be sorted out on the merits of the quality of our life on earth. The good will go to the Father's house where a place has been prepared for each one as per the Lord's words in the Bible.

You assume the belief of a soul.
It would be all well and good for me to say "it ceases to exist", but I don't believe in souls....
As such it never existed in the first place.
And you?
The very concept of "you" is just a name for the imaginary collective defined by what falls beneath your outer layer of skin and hair... none of which is distinctly collected and connected away from the rest of existence anyway..... and "you" will most certainly cease to exist when the mechanics inside that are keeping everything running together become so defective they don't work any more.

If the person who dies is a true child of God, they are immediately carried away in their soul existance by angels to heaven:
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; - Luke 16:22.
On the other hand, if someone dies without the LORD Jesus Christ as their Saviour, they go to a place of silence called Hades, until they awaken to the judgement of God on the last day:
The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. - Psalm 115:17.
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. - Revelation 20:11-13.

properly, i think of this explains it.... "And now appropriate to thy question relating to the soul of guy and its survival after dying. understand thou of a fact that the soul, after its separation from the physique, will proceed to progression until it attaineth the presence of God, in a state and condition which neither the revolution of a while and centuries, nor the variations and probabilities of this worldwide, can regulate. it incredibly is going to bear as long because of the fact the dominion of God, His sovereignty, His dominion and ability will bear. it incredibly is going to show up the signs and warning signs of God and His attributes, and could demonstrate His loving kindness and bounty. The flow of My Pen is stilled whilst it attempteth to befittingly describe the loftiness and glory of so exalted a station. the honour with which the Hand of Mercy will make investments the soul is alongside with no tongue can accurately demonstrate, nor the different earthly employer describe. Blessed is the soul which, on the hour of its separation from the physique, is sanctified from the ineffective imaginings of the peoples of the worldwide. such a soul liveth and moveth in accordance with the want of its author, and entereth the all-optimum Paradise. (Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. a hundred and fifty five)

Soul is a divine thing and no harm ever can happen to it. Soul is not ours, we in fact are the souls. And if we can realize that we start living in eternity.

It disconnects from the body. After that, we have several possibilities: we could run out of energy and 'fall asleep', we could move to a different frequency/dimension where we would live in whatever private 'world' we create for ourselves, or we could literally land in a real Heaven or Hell. What happens after that is unknown.

WHEN A PERSON DIES HIS SOUL GOES STRAIGHT UP TO HEAVEN..
TO BE ABSENT FROM THE BODY IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THE LORD.
ALL SOULS BELONG TO GOD.
THERE WILL BE A DAY WHEN WE ARE JUDGED FOR WHAT WE HAVE DONE...BOTH GOOD AND EVIL.UNLESS WE SETTLE THE ACCOUNT WITH GOD NOW.
THE PURPOSE OF THE DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURECTION OF CHRIST WAS HE PRESENTED HIMSELF AS A SACRIFICE FOR OUT SINS TO THE FATHER.
JESUS PAID THE PRICE FOR OUT SINS AND WE CAN RECEIVE FORGIVNESS JUST FOR THE ASKING.
GOD PUTS THEM IN THE SEA OF FORGETFULNESS AND PUTS UP A SIGN,,,,,,,NO FISHING! DO NOT BRING UP YOUR OLD SINS...JUST LEARN FROM THEM....
