If protestants evolved from catholics, why are there still catholics?

Also, after you finish answering that question, one more thing: If you believe that your answer does NOT apply to humans and monkeys, can you explain why not?

Silas G: Yes, you are correct that this was not my original idea. I happened to read it on the Internet recently, and I thought it made good material for a question considering how many people ask about the monkeys/humans thing.

What you've go on your hands is an "analogy". That means you've created a simple way of describing a complex thing by changing the subject. This works great when you're trying to get a very difficult to understand point across. Unfortunately, it's a very naive thing to do to try to use it to prove a point. Quite simply put, since the source and subject are different, eventually there is guaranteed to be something that can be said to be true about the source that cannot be said about the subject, and merely stating this fact is enough to make the analogy fall apart.

And in this case, it's no different. In natural selection, different animals have different traits, and those animals with traits more suitable for survival will live to mate and produce offspring. While ideas may be similar (I'm sure there's several good articles on memetics), it can be shown that ideas do not have to respect this model. Which is to say, that there's no definite "time limit" or "lifespan" for an idea, and due to the freely copyable nature of an idea, they are rarely, if ever, "killed", since that would mean the destruction of every living person who has the idea, as well as any recording of the idea, in any medium.

The other difference, is that when a species is "dead", or has been "replaced", it really is dead. There's no making any more of that species. It's gone. When an idea is "dead" or has been "replaced", on the other hand, and circumstances arise where the original idea would be more useful than the new idea, often times, the idea is "ressurected", and exists again.

Therefore, there are fundamental differences between the protestant from catholic analogy, an the human from monkey analogy, which were to be shown.

And PLEASE don't make the mistake of thinking me merely pointing this out reflects on my personal views in any way. I simply saw the massive deck-stacking that went into your question, coupled with the fact that it's catchy-sounding enough, and has actually been asked by other people enough, for me to believe it's not your original material to begin with.

Of course, if it is, it merely proves my point anyway.

Protestants did not evolve from anything; they chose a path to God that has a different level of personal involvement with worship. This can be seen also in the office work place. You have the owner, the Office manager, the department managers then the workers, Some department managers choice to "micro manage” Some work well in this setting some do not, There is still a Owner regardless. This is about as close to a secular example I could come up with. The same applies to God. Now you ask about monkeys why there are still there. So why are they? What have you seen that proves to you that you came from monkeys? Some scene in a museum? Tell me what does that prove. If I took the skull of the elephant man, from the last century, and showed it to you and said this is the missing link between man and elephant. Could you prove it wrong? Or would you just accept it as so? There are Children born today with 6 fingers or 6 toes are these examples of the "next steep" if so should their children not be born with the "good extra stuff" as evolution teaches.

If you want to believe you 'evolved from monkeys" go for it, it would take someone with a monkeys IQ, to buy such a load of nonsense without question

The idea that one thing may evolve from another does not predicate that the other then be eliminated.

Even if all of religion was based on that premise, it doesn't disprove creationism, only make various creationists look silly.

Why can't you use a recipe for fried chicken to make a chocolate cake?

Because it's not the same thing. One is a social/spiritual change, the other is physiological.

Spiritually and socially, if a person or group of people set their mind to change one thing into another, they can. Look at how western society has changed in the last 50 years.

But try as we might, we cannot turn a squirrel into a rabbit. Neither can we make one from scratch.

Interesting, thought provoking question. Thanks for asking.

They didn't. If anything, they evolved from Jesus' teachings.

At best, they had a common ancestor.

Because Catholics are a superior breed. Protestants didn't evolve, they devolved.
