No, it was a physical place. Its actually E.DIN which means "Abode of the Righteous Ones". Its the name given to a cluster of small cities that existed between the Persian gulf and what is now Baghdad, along the Euphrates river. The Cities were Eridu (which is the origin of the word "Earth"), Laras, Nippur, Bad-Tibira, Larak, Sippar, Shuruppak and Lagash.
It was buried during the great deluge, but some of the cities have since been excavated.
Texts written on clay tablets found in the excavated cities contain details of an advanced society and much of the original Old Testament stories up until the flood, yet they talk of the original Mesopotamian gods as apposed to the singular deity its been rewritten to.
These clay tablets are on display in the British Museum.

No. The Garden of Eden is NOT a metaphor.

Follow it through to it's logical end.

If the Garden is merely a metaphor, then so is the forbidden fruit.

If the forbidden fruit was merely a metaphor, then so was eating of said fruit, and thus so was the "fall" of mankind, and so is sin.

That makes the rest of the Bible utter nonsense. The Bible says that death is the results of sin. The Bible says that Jesus is the "second Adam". It also says that Jesus died for and because of sin. Jesus quoted the Old Testament as though he believed it.

I can go on, but I think these few items is sufficient to get the point across.

The Garden of Eden is where ever one makes it to be like
a special place or a frame of mind that makes one feel the most happiest and completely at peace in mind, body and soul. For me the garden of eden is being naked in my recreation and enjoying nature as I was created without the hangups of materialism covering my body with unnecessary clothing and being completely natural with natures gifts surrounding my being

The story of the Garden of Eden is about how humanity evolved from a hunter/gatherer lifestyle to one of agriculture. While the men were off hunting, the women stayed behind to gather fruits, nuts, and vegitables. Women (Eve) thus discovered the secret of planting seeds and making the food grow (making her "Godlike").

If you are going that route(a metaphor) then Adam and Eve were not the first 2 and only 2 that created all of society.
